4 best new movies (and one godawful one) to watch this weekend on Hulu, Peacock, HBO Max and more (August 1-2)

Leading the pack is a darkly funny romance between two stars of "The Odyssey" — "The Drama" — landing on HBO Max.Over on Hulu, you can catch "The Devil Wears Prada 2" for more of the charm that made the first one such a cult classic. For the #gamers and families with kiddos, "The Super Mario Galaxy Movie" jumped from PVOD to Peacock this week, a nostalgia flashbang of a movie that I'm still salty didn't get another earworm from Jack Black's Bowser.Meanwhile, over on Prime Video, I can't recommend "Women Talking" enough for a more thought-provoking watch this weekend. A powerful piece of art, that one. On the other end of the spectrum, for some tasty Hollywood slop, the star-crossed "M3GAN" sequel "SOULM8TE" starring Lily Sullivan as, get this, an AI android that goes rogue! Original, I know, but I'm hate-watching it this weekend nonetheless. Stanley Tucci's character gets his long-overdue flowers in one of the movie's strongest scenes, which tugs at your heartstrings just the right amount without feeling saccharine.In the 20 years since Andy (Anne Hathaway) and her turquoise sweater made a splash at Runway magazine, she's built a successful journalism career that takes a nosedive in the movie's opening moments. Runway, now a shadow of its former self, throws her a lifeline and recruits her to repair the magazine's reputation and steer it back on course. Following the massive success of the 2023 hit, this sequel doubles down on the chaos with a kaleidoscope of dazzling visuals, fan-favorite characters, and a plot that proves even more grating than the first. Charlie Thompson (Robert Pattinson) thinks he knows everything about his fiancée, Emma Harwood (Zendaya), until a dinner with friends reveals a shocking secret from her past that makes him rethink the whole relationship. With the clock ticking until their wedding day, Charlie wonders whether he can spend the rest of his life with someone who suddenly feels like a stranger.I'm zipping it on further spoilers because this is one of those movies that's best gone into knowing as little as possible. But the film never sensationalizes their pain, instead focusing on the difficult conversations between the women as they decide how best to move forward.Told with remarkable restraint, "Women Talking" keeps the women's experiences and resilience at the forefront throughout. I'm one of the few who enjoyed the corny, "Terminator 2" vibes in "M3GAN 2.0," and I think this'll be a fun trainwreck to watch this weekend.Directed and co-written by Kate Dolan, the sci-fi thriller stars David Rysdahl as a grieving widower who buys an AI android (Lily Sullivan) designed to help him cope with the loss of his wife — only for things to take a dark turn.
