Everything pointed towards Jana Nayagan becoming Vijay's biggest blockbuster. It was his farewell film, his first release after entering politics, and one of the most anticipated Tamil films in years. But while the film has comfortably crossed the Rs 200-crore mark worldwide, it hasn't matched the blistering pace of Leo or GOAT. The reasons go far beyond the film itself. The film was supposed to be the crescendo of Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Vijay's 33-year-long acting career. Instead, six days in, it's a solid hit that everyone agrees should have been so much bigger. As of Day 6 (Tuesday, July 28), Jana Nayagan has collected Rs 143.40 crore nett (gross minus taxes) in India, with an India gross of Rs 167.57 crore. Add the overseas gross of Rs 78.50 crore, and the film's worldwide gross stands at Rs 246.07 crore.Compare that to Vijay's own last two outings at the same six-day mark. The Greatest of All Time aka GOAT had collected Rs 162.75 crore nett in India (Rs 189.33 crore gross) and Rs 316.13 crore worldwide by Day 6. Leo, his biggest hit, was sitting even higher — around Rs 249.8 crore nett in India and past Rs 450 crore worldwide by the same point. Jana Nayagan isn't a flop by any measure — it's comfortably inside the top six opening-week Tamil films ever — but against Vijay's last two releases, the collection is marginally lower in the crucial first week. That gap is strange on paper, because Vijay remains one of the most bankable stars in Indian cinema. His films run on star power alone — audiences show up whether or not the story earns it. Jana Nayagan, as his farewell film, should have been set up for a monstrous opening by that same logic, and the pre-sales in January backed that up. So what actually held it back? The seven-month delayThe first blow was the CBFC (Central Board of Film Certification) roadblock. A censor board dispute pushed the film's release from its original January 9 date all the way to July 23 — seven months later — with the standoff eventually escalating to the Madras High Court and Supreme Court. That kind of delay is never just a scheduling inconvenience: Jana Nayagan was made on a budget of nearly 500 crore, and seven months of interest accruing on that kind of capital means the film now needs to earn several hundred crore more just to break even, before it can even be called profitable. For producers and distributors who had already locked in deals expecting a Pongal blockbuster, that's seven months of carrying costs with nothing coming in.The leak The delay barely had time to settle before the next hit landed. In April, a complete HD (high-definition) version of the unreleased film was leaked online — reportedly assembled by a freelance editor from stolen footage and uploaded to Google Drive before spreading to piracy sites. During a Madras High Court bail hearing, Chennai police told the court that close to 1.2 crore people had illegally watched the film before it was taken down — a staggering number for a film that hadn't even been publicly released yet.The A-certificateEven without the leak, Jana Nayagan would have been fighting an uphill battle at the domestic box office, because it also carries an A certificate from the CBFC — unusual for a Vijay mass entertainer, and a real handicap for a star whose biggest strength has always been drawing entire families into theatres.Multiplexes in major cities are strictly enforcing the under-18 restriction, and while some single screens in smaller B and C centres have been more relaxed about it, the certificate has still kept a meaningful chunk of Vijay's traditional family audience away. The overseas squeezeThe overseas market, which has historically given Vijay's films a massive boost, hasn't offered much relief either. The same seven-month delay meant Jana Nayagan landed in the middle of an unusually crowded Hollywood window — releasing on July 23, sandwiched between Christopher Nolan's The Odyssey (July 17) and Spider-Man: Brand New Day (July 30). With US screens split between these two big-ticket Hollywood releases, Jana Nayagan now has access to far fewer screens in the American market than a Vijay film would typically command. The receptionAnd then there's the content itself, which has split opinion in a way none of the logistics could control. Fans have largely embraced it as an emotional send-off, but several critics have described it as thinly veiled TVK (Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam) propaganda rather than a standalone political thriller — a criticism that's shaped a chunk of the negative word-of-mouth in its first week.Between the delay, the leak, the A certificate, and the reduced overseas footprint, Jana Nayagan had more working against it than any other film in Vijay's recent career — and it's still managed to cross the Rs 200-crore mark. Whether it can close the gap with Leo and GOAT, though, is something only its long theatrical run will actually tell us.- EndsPublished On: Jul 29, 2026 13:53 IST
