Six years after Extraction, Sam Hargrave is moving from Tyler Rake’s one-man missions to Matchbox: The Movie, an ensemble action movie led by John Cena. Cena plays Sean, an undercover CIA agent whose return home drags four childhood friends into a hunt for stolen nuclear material. Instead of following one mercenary from fight to fight, the movie gives Hargrave a group of very different people trying to survive a situation none of them expected to be part of. Extraction 2 action scenes have already shown how Hargrave likes to keep things moving once trouble starts. Its 21-minute prison escape begins in the middle of a riot, spills into a car chase, moves onto a speeding train, and eventually pulls a helicopter into the mix. Matchbox takes that instinct and gives Hargrave an entire spy story where the next chase, location, or vehicle can change what the characters are dealing with. Matchbox is also a name people already know without an existing story Hargrave has to follow. There is no well known hero, villain, or plot audiences are waiting to see recreated. The cars bring the connection to the toys, while Hargrave gets to figure out what happens around them. Cena helps distinguish the movie from Extraction as well. Infact, Cena initially thought the Matchbox movie would fail until he read the script. Sean can handle himself when things get violent, but Cena can also play off the four friends who remember him before the CIA ever entered the picture. Before directing Extraction, Sam Hargrave worked as a stunt coordinator on Captain America: Civil War, Avengers: Infinity War, and Avengers: Endgame. His experience shows in the Extraction movies, particularly when Chris Hemsworth's Tyler Rake has to fight his way through narrow hallways, crowded streets, and moving vehicles. Matchbox: The Movie puts Hargrave's stunt experience to work on a much bigger scale, with muscle cars, motorcycles, helicopters, and trucks regularly getting caught up in the fighting. During one chase, Sean fights rogue CIA agents on the back of a speeding container truck while Aimee races through a tunnel in a muscle car, pursued by armed motorcyclists. Another sequence sees a helicopter destroy an off-road buggy, while a separate stunt sends a truck flying off a tow-truck ramp. These aren't just vehicles passing through the background of a fight. In Matchbox, the vehicles themselves are part of the danger. Why John Cena Is Key To Making A Franchise John Cena has already spent time behind the wheel in Fast & Furious, playing Dom Toretto's younger brother Jakob in F9 and Fast X. In the latter, Jakob sacrifices himself by driving a cannon-equipped car into enemy vehicles to help Dom's son escape. However, Cena's work in The Marine all the way to Peacemaker shows why he's such a good fit for Matchbox. As Peacemaker, he turns a jungle shootout into a competition with Bloodsport over who can kill their enemies in the most ridiculous way. His scenes with Vigilante in Peacemaker are just as entertaining, especially when the two argue over their questionable ideas while treating themselves like serious crime fighters. Cena is comfortable being the butt of the joke, even when he's playing someone convinced he's the toughest person in the room. Having a sense of humor fits really well in Sean's reunion with his childhood friends in Matchbox. Aimee is a race-car driver, Charmaine is a helicopter pilot, Crosby operates construction equipment, and Ted is a chemistry teacher. Sean might be the only trained CIA agent, but the others have skills that prove useful once they're being chased by armed operatives. More importantly, these are people who knew Sean long before he started working undercover, so he can't really expect them to treat him like the hardened secret agent he has become. Cena gets to play the hero without having to carry every fight or deliver every joke himself. If a sequel to Matchbox: The Movie happens, bringing these five friends back together could be just as great as whatever outrageous car chase Hargrave comes up with next.
