The tube will seal tight so that air will not escape. The blowers or the vacuum pumps turn on, either to push or pull the package, depending on layout and direction of travel. Finally, when the package is about to arrive, the airflow slows down for the package to land safely at its destination.In larger mechanisms where the tubes can be branched, the packages are guided by a mechanism of diverters, switches, and a central hub. The diverters act as junction switches to turn to specific directions. The central hub co-ordinates traffic and directs the capsules to the right destinations.Pros and consOne of the greatest advantages of a pneumatic tube system is its speed. For example, in a large medical facility, where sending a blood sample from one room to another may take 10-15 minutes on foot, it will take under a minute for it to be sent to its destined room via a pneumatic tube system. They are also cost-effective and time-saving. As the packages move, staff members can focus on bigger things. The overall system has only a few moving parts, so maintenance is easy. The only maintenance needed is preventing blockages, seal wear, or other technical faults. There is also better safety of the package.However, there are also some downsides to it. While a pneumatic system may not cost much to maintain, installation costs itself are really high. The tubes also do not support large and heavy objects without any specialised carriers and controls. Complex routing across wider areas is also a challenge.Pneumatic tubes show how a simple pressure difference can become a reliable transport system, turning invisible and weightless air into a viable source of motion.A brief historyPneumatic transportation was invented around 1799. Subsequently, London began operating with pneumatic transport in postal service in 1853, to transport parcels. This technology spread across major cities, and it was used to carry telegrams, letters, and money.In the second half of the 19th Century, the technology then spread to major cities like Paris, Berlin, and Prague. Soon after, it would become a valuable asset for stock exchange offices, banks, and newspaper delivery. Then in the U.S., the first mail-tube installation was set up in 1867 by Alfred Ely Beach. From the 1890s, postal tube networks operated in cities such as New York, Philadelphia, Boston, Chicago, and St. Louis.Pneumatic tubes gradually declined as telephones, automobiles, conveyor systems, and electronic communication came into the picture.
