The serpent was safely captured at around 11 a.m. in Barangay Ilasan Ilaya by a team from the Tayabas City Environment and Natural Resources Office (CENRO) led by its chief, Melvin Rada. Photos of the rescue show the cobra had been hidden inside one of the wooden posts of the duck pen. Article continues after this advertisement READ: Girl dies after shielding 3 cousins from cobra attack in Sarangani After it was secured, the snake was placed inside a plastic box and was turned over to the Department of Environment and Natural Resources’ Community Environment and Natural Resources Office (DENR-CENRO) for proper assessment and disposition. “Although the Philippine cobra is highly venomous, it generally poses no threat to humans unless it is disturbed, provoked, or threatened,” the CENRO said in Filipino. The International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) classifies the Philippine cobra as a “near threatened” species. It is known to inhabit various environments, including tropical moist forests, agricultural areas, and urban communities. A species listed as near threatened is considered at risk of becoming endangered if its population declines.
