NEWCASTLE’s relegation odds have skyrocketed after the sudden departure of manager Eddie Howe. The odds have now jumped to a nerve-wracking 17 per cent, the fifth highest in the division before a ball has been kicked. Newly-promoted Hull (83 per cent), Coventry (54 per cent) and Ipswich (52 per cent) lead the odds. And fourth most likely for the drop are Newcastle’s rivals Sunderland, despite a stellar last season that saw them storm to European football with a seventh-place finish. There were concerns for Howe’s side last season after a nightmare spell in early 2026 saw them freefall down the table. But they managed to recover with time to spare and rally to a 12th-place finish, enough for most fans not to fear for Howe’s job. Now he is set to leave, with little-known manager Matthias Jaissle in negotiations to take over at St James’ Park.
