Then the next seven years happened. It's no secret that Blade has been trapped in development hell, fighting bad scripts and a revolving door of talent instead of vampires. Unfortunately, for whatever reason, the project has proven completely unable to get off the ground after almost a decade, and Mahershala Ali has finally confirmed in an interview with GQ Magazine that he has "moved on." Blade is dead. "I'm good," he said, laughing. "You had me under contract, [Marvel Studios] have billions of dollars, if they wanted to do the movie, we would've done the movie. So we're not doing the movie [...] I feel ready to move on from the Blade questions. Those questions are for them. They didn't want to do it, so they should answer that question." What Went Wrong With Blade? We don't know the complete story of what happened to Blade, but there have been plenty of rumors over the years, as well as public departures from the project, that help paint a picture. Shortly after it was announced in 2019, Watchmen writer Stacy-Osei Kuffour and Mogul Mowgli director Bassam Tariq were brought on board, with the goal of filming in 2022 for a 2023 release date. However, in 2022, Tariq left the project. X-Men '97 writer Beau DeMayo stepped in for rewrites later that year, before Lovecraft Country director Yann Demange took the reins. Reports suggested that the film was now a female-led ensemble, with Blade himself taking a back seat and instead serving as a mentor to a younger generation of vampire hunters. Mahershala Ali was reportedly unhappy with the direction, and so a year later, True Detective writer Nic Pizzolatto was brought in for further rewrites. In 2023, production halted due to the WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes, but even after resuming, reports claimed that the film was struggling to find a working script. Famed actor Delroy Lindo (who appeared in Sinners last year) departed the project in 2024 due to these endless delays. Yann Demange followed shortly after. Even more rewrites followed, this time from Fantastic Four: First Steps and Thor: Ragnarök writer Eric Pearson, before Blade was completely pulled from Disney's release calendar. Marvel Studios and Disney haven't said much about the project amid all this turmoil, but Kevin Feige stated earlier this month on the Happy Sad Confused podcast that he feels "like a gigantic loser and failure" for not getting the movie off the ground with Mahershala Ali. "We didn't want to simply just put a leather outfit on him and have him start killing vampires. It had to be unique," he explained. "It fell into the time when we started pulling back and saying, 'Only accept insanely great.' And it wasn't 'insanely great' at the time. We didn’t feel like, as we often do, you can have a good script and make it a great script through production.
