Apple TV’s Dystopian Hit Quietly Gets Better After 1 Massive Rewrite

The show in question, Silo, has seemingly divided many viewers with its latest season 3. While many appreciate some of its new story beats, others seem to have a problem with its growing deviations from the original Silo books. The biggest book change in Silo season 3 was introduced in episode 1 itself, revealing that Rebecca Ferguson's Juliette has lost her memory. This story development was initially criticized not only because it changes the books but also because it seems a little too cliché. Fortunately, as Silo season 3 has progressed, the amnesia story has become more and more logical for the plot. In Silo season 3's episode 4, another major book change is introduced towards the end. This change completely flips a main character's fate. Given how this change significantly drifts the Apple TV sci-fi show away from its source material, it is hard not to see how it will be controversial. However, this change, too, makes a lot of sense and seems to be in tandem with the show's larger vision. Silo Season 3 Rewrites Bernard’s Book Story Silo season 2's ending aligns with that of the first book, where Juliette and Bernard find themselves trapped in Silo 18's decontamination chamber. In the books, Juliette survives the incident and soon becomes the mayor of her home silo. Bernard, however, succumbs to his injuries and does not get to redeem himself. The Apple TV sci-fi show was seemingly treading the same direction by showing how Bernard was murdered by Robert Sims after he survived the incident from Silo season 2's ending. With an intriguing twist, however, Silo season 3 has now confirmed that Bernard is still alive. As Juliette walks into one of the lower levels of Silo 18 to find more answers, she runs into Bernard, who now seems to be on her side. In episode 5, Silo season 3 will likely delve deeper into what Bernard wishes to tell Juliette. However, as season 2's ending established, he experienced a major shift in his morals and realized how the creators of the silos did not care about him or any of the survivors. It is this realization that will seemingly prompt him to help Juliette instead of going against her. Bernard’s Redemption Makes His Story Even Better In The Apple TV Show Silo season 2 established Bernard was not a simple one-dimensional villain who wanted his people to suffer. He only enforced the founders' rules on his people because he believed he was serving the greater good. He was led to believe that he followed the rules and kept his people from seeking answers, Silo 18's citizens would have a shot at survival. However, in Silo season 2's ending moments, Lukas Kyle helped him learn about the Safeguard Procedure, making him realize that he and his people could be wiped out within minutes. This realization first prompted him to leave Silo 18 for good and abandon all his responsibilities. However, Juliette gave him hope that they could still save their people by stopping the Safeguard Procedure. In season 3, however, Juliette remembers little about her past, which prevents her from protecting her people from the Safeguard. This is where Bernard seems to be the missing piece of puzzle in her story. Since Juliette encountered him as soon as she entered Silo 18 and only told him about the Safeguard and its potential countermeasure, Bernard is the only character who can remind her of what she learned from Solo in Silo 17. Bernard's survival not only ensures Juliette recovers important aspects of her memory but also makes room for him to redeem himself. In Silo season 3, episode 4's ending, the Tim Robbins character does not look well, suggesting that he might not have a lot of time on his hands. However, by helping Juliette unlock some of her most important memories, he can finally find redemption before he faces doom.
