Apple TV's Cape Fear Horror Series Brought Back A 1991 Producer Who Never Took The Credit

While Spielberg is best known for his work as an Academy Award-winning director who has brought stories like E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial, Jurassic Park, and Jaws to life, he is also an incredibly successful producer who has had a hand in creating literally hundreds of projects personally, and through his production company, Amblin Entertainment. But while he has had his name attached to hundreds of movies at this point as both a director, producer, and in various other roles, there is one project where he was noticeably absent, despite playing a major role in getting the project made. Thankfully, the recent TV adaptation of Cape Fear has gone some way to rectifying that, but the story of how this all came to be is a fascinating insight into the inner workings of Hollywood. Why Steven Spielberg Isn't Credited For 1991's Cape Fear Movie In the 1980s and 1990s, both Spielberg and fellow director Martin Scorsese were at high points in their careers. With some notable successes under their belts and more projects coming their way, the pair ended up forming a friendship and deep connection that also impacted their work. For instance, at one point, Scorsese was working on a project that he started to lose passion for, Schindler's List, at the same time that Spielberg was set to direct and deliver a remake of the original 1961 Cape Fear movie, but he wasn't overly enthusiastic about the project. So, in a highly unusual Hollywood move, the pair swapped films. By this point, the foundations were laid out for these projects, and so Spielberg's production company, Amblin, stayed on as a producer for Cape Fear, along with Barbara De Fina, and Kathleen Kennedy and Frank Marshall as executive producers. However, Spielberg felt that the movie was darker than the brand he was developing for himself, and decided not to attach his name to the film. Since then, Spielberg has evidently branched out to explore darker stories, and his body of work is much more varied, which could be a big part of why he chose to take on the credit as an executive producer this time around when it came to the Apple TV series. How Involved Steven Spielberg Is With Apple TV's Cape Fear The role of executive producer in Hollywood is broad and varied, with some EP's being deeply involved in the creative and technical processes of every piece of a film. However, this credit may also be used more as an honorary title, crediting someone who had a major influence in other ways, such as creating or establishing a character or lore around a project. As a result, it is worth digging deeper to learn what it actually means that not only did Martin Scorsese end up being an executive producer on the Cape Fear TV show, but also Steven Spielberg earned the same title. While Spielberg and Scorsese reviewed the episodes and provided some notes, they did not visit the set, and they appear to have placed a great deal of trust in the new team to deliver their vision without pushing for their own ideas to overhaul the production. In all honesty, this seems like the best possible outcome. The show benefited from the backing and brand recognition of two of the all-time greatest directors, while also having room to breathe and explore how the story should be told for a modern audience. And ultimately, Cape Fear was all the better for this incredible pedigree and support, both behind and in front of the cameras.
