A 1998 PlayStation Classic Is Finally Being Remade For A Modern Platform

It’s been an era of remakes and remasters as we visit older generations of games and see them in new light on current hardware. One of the best examples of this will soon be seen with the release of Final Fantasy 7: Rebirth in 2027, which will be the third part of the remake series adapting the fan-favorite 1997 JRPG from Square. Even though big remakes like those of Final Fantasy and Resident Evil are often in the spotlight, there are several others that are still being made. As seen in a report by ComicBook, a new remake of a 1998 PlayStation game is making its way onto a modern platform on July 23, and fans of the original or those who desire to know the franchise will be given a chance to do so nearly 28 years later. As was highlighted in the report, Hard Edge (released as T.R.A.G.: Tactical Rescue Assault Group - Mission of Mercy in North America) is making a comeback in the form of a remake spin-off called Hard Edge - War Zone. The new remake of the classic PlayStation 1 game will be a complete overhaul of the original, not only enhancing visuals, but also changing its story and genre entirely. While the classic 1998 title was an action-adventure title with survival mechanics that made it extremely similar to the Resident Evil series, this new interpretation will flip it on its head. Seen in the report and confirmed by the game’s product page on Steam, Hard Edge - War Zone will be a 4v4 real-time tactical card battler that will require turn-based strategy from players. It will be set in the same world as the original title, but its main feature is how it reimagines gameplay into something completely different – in a sense, it seems its premise is something similar to the spin-off Persona 5 Tactica, which retells the events of Persona 5 from a different gameplay perspective. Different from Atlus’ take on the spin-off, Hard Edge - War Zone will take place six months before the events of the original game. In this remake of the PlayStation 1 game, players will be able to use the deck-building system to improve their odds and reach their preferred playstyle, combined with the game’s firefights. For now, it’s been confirmed that Hard Edge - War Zone will be released on Steam on July 23, and it’s still unclear if the new game will receive a port for other platforms, like PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, or Nintendo Switch 2.
