Armed with what has been described as the most powerful weapon in DC lore — the power ring — a Green Lantern’s power is limited only by the extent of his will. That willpower sets up the Corps as one of DC’s most formidable forces. Whoever wears this ring can go toe-to-toe with the likes of Superman and even cosmic-tier threats like the Anti-Monitor, the living embodiment of the antimatter universe. As a unit, the Green Lantern Corps is practically unbeatable. When ranking the most powerful Lanterns in DC Comics history, the criteria should be clear: some nominees are former Green Lanterns or beings who were never part of the Corps to begin with. If the list is restricted strictly to the most powerful members of the Green Lantern Corps, then those latter candidates should not qualify for consideration. Kilowog As a Green Lantern drill sergeant, Kilowog trained many of the more elite Green Lanterns, including Hal Jordan. That role also reflects his experience in battle, which he has proved across DC lore against foes like Nekron and Sinestro. His Bolovaxian physiology already grants superhuman strength, stamina, and durability. Allied with his indomitable will, unrivaled dedication to the Corps, and sometimes grumpy persona, he easily ranks as the fine line of battle in any major conflict the Corps engages in. One of his most impressive feats came in Crisis on Infinite Earths. Here, he saves all sixteen billion life-energies of his people inside his ring when Bolovax Vik was destroyed, though they were later lost again when Sinestro destroyed their new home. John Stewart From a poverty-stricken young lad in Detroit to the US Marine Corps, to the Green Lantern Corps, and then to the Justice League, that is the story of Green Lantern John Stewart. His progression also reflects why he can wield Green Lantern-level power without a physical ring, as he did in Justice League Vol. 4. There’s a reason why his Corpsmen dub him the “Master Builder”. As a military mind — and more specifically, a Marine — John Stewart’s constructs are as precise as they are strategic. They often take the form of sniper rifles, catapults, and heavy construction equipment drawn from his architectural training. He even created a Superman construct capable of surviving a barrage of lasers. Two of his most impressive constructs came in Green Lantern: War Journal and Green Lantern: Vol.4. In the former, he forms a fully autonomous construct of his late sister, Ellie; in the latter, he attempts to rebuild an entire planet and its society. Sodam Yat Sodam Yat is what you get when a being like Superman becomes friends with the power ring. Sodam is from the Daxam homeworld, and Daxamites are similar to Kryptonians in many physiological terms: they draw power from a yellow sun, are super-strong, invulnerable, can fly, move super-fast, possess heat vision, super-breath, and enhanced senses across the electromagnetic spectrum. With his Daxamite powers enhanced when he puts on the ring, Sodam is arguably the strongest DC character on paper; his willpower ranks lower than the likes of Hal Jordan, John Stewart, and Sinestro, however. That combination has carried him through major victories, though not without cost. During the Sinestro Corps War, he destroyed Ranx the Sentient City’s core to save Mogo and became Ion’s new host. In Emerald Eclipse, he nearly killed himself infusing Daxam’s red sun with Ion’s power, empowering enslaved Daxamites to overthrow Mongul. Mogo The largest Green Lantern by mass, Mogo is a sentient planet and a Green Lantern with the sacred duty of recruiting new members. He does this by guiding the rings to new sentient beings after their hosts die. By virtue of being a living planet, he naturally possesses the power to manipulate ecosystems in and around him. This includes the weather, chlorokinesis — controlling and creating constructs out of vegetation growing on his largely plant-covered surface — and gravity. His gravity manipulation is so potent that not only can he trap lanterns within his own surface, but his presence at Green Lantern meetings on Oa would tear the entire planet apart. The latter fact was crucial in defeating the Black Lantern invasion of Oa in Blackest Night, where he pulled all lanterns (friend and foe) to himself. Mogo has never been recorded battling another friendly Green Lantern since his conflicts in DC lore are exclusively with external threats. But if push comes to shove, only a handful of lanterns, if any, can survive him. Sinestro Perhaps the most infamous of all former Green Lanterns, Thaal Sinestro was arguably the finest ring-wielder in Corps history before his fall from grace. Nothing says “skilled” quite like being personally assigned by Guardian Ganthet to train prodigies, including Hal Jordan. Even before his Yellow Lantern story, Sinestro mastered the emotions with almost flawless precision, which is a key quality for any elite Corps member. Of course, this mastery was mostly channeled into fear, from which he subjugated the citizens of Korugar before he later obtained his yellow ring, established the Sinestro Corps, and tamed Parallax itself. However, he has shown that even a return to the color green of the Corps does not diminish his abilities. In Green Lantern (Vol. 5) #20, Hal Jordan sacrificed his own ring to make Sinestro a Green Lantern once again so the two could battle Volthoom. Hal Jordan Debuting in 1959’s Showcase #22, Hal Jordan is the first human Green Lantern and probably the most famous lantern of all. In this ranking, he also boasts feats that record as the most numerous and impressive amongst the Corps. He resurrected himself to battle Nekron and Volthoom — both of whom rank among the most feared entities in the entire DC cosmology- and wiped out Sinestro and his Yellow Lantern Corps in Hal Jordan and the Green Lantern Corps #7. On top of this, he’s survived and overcome both a Black Lantern ring and Parallax (essentially fear itself given form). For Green Lanterns, willpower is everything. It’s the fuel that powers their rings, shapes their constructs, and determines the very limits of what they can do; in other words, the stronger the will, the stronger the Lantern. Hal possesses the fiercest, rawest, and most abundant reserve of that willpower of anyone ever to wear the ring. Such was the strength of his will that he forced his own ring to break its most sacred rule and kill the traitorous Guardian Krona. This wasn’t the only time he defied the Guardians’ inviolable authority over the ring. In Hal Jordan and the Green Lantern Corps: Rebirth #1, he crafted his own power ring purely from willpower. Kyle Rayner In DC Canon, Kyle Rayner’s feats cover both his days as a Green Lantern proper and a White Lantern. Therefore, if the entire Lantern career is considered, he has no equal. If the ranking is limited to Green Lantern-only feats, he still has no equal. He once did the unthinkable by wielding all the power rings at once in Green Lantern: New Guardians #1, after he mastered the emotional spectrum. Hal himself admits this in issue 17 of Hal Jordan and the Green Lantern Corps when telling Kyle that he’s essentially the greatest Lantern ever to exist, across nearly every color of the spectrum. But even just Kyle’s Green Lantern era — particularly his “Torchbearer” days — trumps Hal’s, if the ranking gives full weight to those Green Lantern feats. Rayner creates some of the finest constructs of any Lantern, though someone could fiercely argue this in favor of Hal Jordan. Rayner also wielded Ion twice: first during Hal Jordan’s sacrifice in The Final Night and then during the Rann-Thanagar War in Infinite Crisis. As Ion, Kyle ascended to near-godhood, gaining the power to manipulate time and space as he pleased.
