Yair Golan says killing Khamenei was a ‘mistake’ for Israel

Israeli opposition leader Yair Golan has said the assassination of Iranian Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei at the start of the US-Israeli war on Iran was a “mistake”, arguing that it did not serve Israel’s interests, The Times of Israel has reported. “I think, unequivocally, the elimination of Khamenei the father was a mistake,” Golan said during an interview in Rishon Lezion. “Not because he didn’t deserve to die, only because it doesn’t serve the interests of the State of Israel,” he added, noting that Khamenei was 86. Golan said that Khamenei being succeeded by his son, Mojtaba Khamenei, had left Iran with “more extreme and violent individuals”. He also criticised Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu for setting what he called an unrealistic goal of toppling Iran’s government, saying it had not been achieved.
