X-Men Introduces Permanent Replacement For Magneto’s Brotherhood

Sign in to your ScreenRant account Marvel and X-Men’s Hellfire Club is a clandestine organization with a storied history in Marvel Comics lore. However, at least in terms of general audiences who may not be up to date on X-Men lore in the past half of a decade, the Hellfire Club is now chiefly associated with and known for the extravagant and gorgeous Hellfire Gala parties that typically involve a bounteous feast of mutantkind politicking and scandalous behavior. Marvel Comics’ Hellfire Galas, as we know them, are a relatively recent development as a renewal of the Hellfire Club’s annual tradition, and the latest one has come and gone in no time at all. X-Men: The Hellfire Murder’s Hellfire Gala is remarkably short-lived yet exquisitely lavish, featuring some fantastic ornate costume designs and gowns at this masquerade ball in Manhattan, and the one-shot comic’s eponymous murder has conceived a brand-new mutant Brotherhood amidst the fray. A New Brotherhood Is Born From The Ashes Of A Hellfire Gala Murder X-Men: The Hellfire Murder #1 establishes a brand-new Brotherhood—“Not a childish old boy’s club. But a Hellfire Brotherhood”—with the intent of wielding the recently deceased Sebastian Shaw’s wealth in an effort to help mutants. As Wolverine learns by stumbling into them while investigating Shaw’s murder, the Hellfire Brotherhood is composed of: Destiny Empath Mastermind Mystique Toad How Will The Hellfire Brotherhood Affect X-Men Lore? Assuming their motives and plans are legitimate, as Mystique argues to Wolverine that they are, it seems as if this Hellfire Brotherhood has mutants’ best interests in mind, all without the ‘Evil’ bit that has traditionally preceded the title of ‘Brotherhood.’ Indeed, the name ‘Brotherhood of Evil Mutants’ was always meant to be ironic, as Mystique herself explicitly admits in Mystique (2003) #2, when she says: “We weren’t fighting people’s perception of mutants, we were fighting our oppression… and systematic extermination.” Whether or not she actually believes this, though, Mystique and the Brotherhood certainly aren’t do-gooders. Nonetheless, considering that the Hellfire Brotherhood wishes to eliminate the means with which Forge’s X-gene-canceling technology could be wielded against mutantkind by Shaw, much less fall into the wrong hands thereafter, it’d be interesting to see where their story goes from here. Besides, they obviously have Wolverine’s discretion and stamp of approval, as he elects not to concern himself or trifle with the matters of the Hellfire Brotherhood, let alone Emma Frost, whom Wolverine deduced and mildly confronted as Shaw’s true killer in X-Men: The Hellfire Murder #1’s epilogue. It’s Shaw, of course, and his murder at the Hellfire Gala he hosted was long overdue for what he did to Krakoa. How self-contained X-Men: The Hellfire Murder is as a one-shot has yet to be seen, though we’ll hopefully get more of Mystique, Destiny, Mastermind, Toad, and Empath’s Hellfire Brotherhood before long in future X-Men adventures.
