Woman killed after falling from bridge onto major A-road before being hit by multiple cars in early hours

A WOMAN has died after she fell from a bridge on to a busy A-road and was hit by several cars. The A45 near Northampton was closed on both sides of the dual carriageway between Wilby Way and the Bedford Road junction yesterday. Emergency services raced to the road but the woman was declared dead at the scene. The road closed at 1.50am and remained shut until 9.44pm. Sign up for The Sun newsletter Thank you! Detective Inspector Nick Peters from Northamptonshire Police’s Serious Collision Investigation Unit said: “The A45 is a key route for many people travelling through Northamptonshire, and we fully appreciate the impact this closure will have on motorists and the wider community. “That’s why I want to reassure the wider public that officers and specialist investigators are working as quickly as possible to carry out their work and reopen the road as soon as it is safe and appropriate to do so. “However, this is a fatal collision in which a woman has tragically lost her life, and whilst we are not treating her death as suspicious, it is vital that we carry out a meticulous and thorough investigation. “Ensuring we gather all available evidence and treat the woman who died, and her loved ones, with the dignity, care and respect they deserve must remain our priority. “We are making every effort to balance those responsibilities with the need to minimise disruption, and we would like to thank the public for their patience and understanding while this important work continues. “We will continue to keep the public informed and will be issuing an update later this evening with what will hopefully be a more accurate road reopening time.” Most read in The Sun Northamptonshire Police have urged anyone who witnessed the incident to contact the force.
