Why was Vijay silent during Jana Nayagan leak? Director H Vinoth reveals

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Vijay did not publicly appeal to fans against watching the leaked version of Jana Nayagan because it could have opened him up to unnecessary political criticism, director H Vinoth has revealed. Addressing the controversy ahead of the film's July 23 release, the filmmaker said the leak was purely a legal matter and was best left to the authorities.Speaking to reporters in Chennai during the film's final round of promotions on Tuesday, Vinoth was asked why Vijay had remained silent after Jana Nayagan surfaced online in high definition months before its theatrical release.Explaining the actor-politician's decision, Vinoth said, "Had Vijay given an appeal, it may have been said that there are so many problems in the country, including the farmers' issue. When he did not make an appeal on such matters, why was he doing it now? That could have become the criticism."He added that the leak was an entirely legal issue and was handled by the police after the producer lodged a complaint. "I think Vijay sir did not involve himself because it may have deviated the matter and led to criticism," the director said. During the interaction, Vinoth also dismissed allegations that Jana Nayagan had been deliberately leaked to benefit Vijay politically ahead of the Tamil Nadu Assembly elections. Calling the claim baseless, he said the allegation had caused him distress."A film made on a budget of around Rs 400 crore cannot be leaked just like that. Even if such a conspiracy had existed, the authorities would have uncovered it within a matter of hours or days," he said. Vinoth also pointed out that Vijay was not the Chief Minister when the film was leaked and had little political power at the time. "He was not the Chief Minister then. These allegations are being made only for political mileage," he said.The filmmaker admitted that the seven-month delay between the film's originally planned January release and its eventual July release had been emotionally draining for the team. "There is a sense of relief, like we have finally reached the end of a problem. And we believe we will get justice for it from the public," he said.Jana Nayagan marks Vijay's final film as he shifts his focus to full-time politics. Directed by H Vinoth, the political drama also stars Pooja Hegde, Bobby Deol, Mamitha Baiju, Prakash Raj, Gautham Vasudev Menon and Narain.
