Called Ox Alpha, the model appeared on a website called OpenRouter last week as a free “stealth model.” It is described as a reasoning model built for coding, long-running AI agent tasks and production workloads. The model ships with a 1-million-token context window, meaning it can theoretically work with very large amounts of text or code in a single session. OpenRouter currently lists its provider simply as “Stealth” and says the actual developer has chosen to remain anonymous.Now this anonymity has, naturally, sent the AI world into detective mode. Who is behind Ox Alpha? Stripe CEO Patrick Collison, whose company is acquiring OpenRouter, has already called Ox Alpha “very impressive”. And developers who have been testing it on coding and agentic workloads are already adding to the feeling that this isn't just another random model quietly uploaded to an AI marketplace.Who made Ox Alpha?OpenRouter's official listing does not name a company. It explicitly says the model was “developed and operated by a third-party provider who has chosen to remain anonymous during this preview.” OpenRouter also makes it clear that it is only routing requests to the model and is not its developer, owner or provider.However, that has not stopped the guessing. One of the biggest theories points towards China, particularly Z.ai, the company behind the GLM family of AI models. Some early observers noticed similarities between Ox Alpha and previous mysterious models associated with the Chinese AI ecosystem. But even analysts who initially leaned towards Z.ai have since backed away from sounding certain. Another theory points towards Microsoft, with some observers speculating that Ox Alpha could be connected to an unreleased MAI model. There has also been speculation around other major AI labs.At this point, however, none of those theories has been confirmed.
