Long-time visitors to Liliputing may have noticed that we’ve been posting news articles less frequently and relying more heavily on news roundups consisting of short summaries or previews of interesting mobile tech news articles found around the web. Here’s why.As I mentioned to Patreon subscribers in August, there are a few reasons for this shift, but basically it comes down to these two:Shifting dynamics of online search and advertising have made it much more difficult for independent bloggers and journalists to make a living through the mix of advertising, affiliate revenue, and donations that have allowed me to treat this mobile tech news and info website as my full-time job for much of the past two decades.Meanwhile I’ve had the opportunity to turn a part-time job that I love into a full-time position as Radio News Managing Editor at PhillyCAM, a community media center in Philadelphia where I provide training and guidance to community journalists working on our community radio news programs.Quite frankly, revenue I earn from this website no longer comes anywhere near paying a living wage, and rather than mount a herculean effort to try to ramp up traffic and revenue, I decided I’d rather focus on keeping the site alive and useful for readers while reducing the amount of time I spend researching and writing articles for the site. Basically, for most of the past two decades, Liliputing has been my day job, while I’ve taken on a variety of other side projects. Now I’m flipping those priorities and making Liliputing my side gig. But the site isn’t going anywhere.Over the past 18 years, Liliputing has published more than 36,000 articles including news updates, in-depth reviews, how-to articles, and coverage from CES and other events. Those archives aren’t going going anywhere – I plan to keep the site online for as long as I can afford to pay the web hosting and maintenance bills. And I’ll continue to post occasional news updates and other articles, time permitting. But for the foreseeable future, we’ll be publishing new content much less frequently. One thing I have been experimenting with is a way to share more short news updates on Mastodon, Bluesky, and other social channels throughout the week, and compiling them into a Liliputing News Roundup once there are four or more of those items. Liliputing may still publish standalone articles from time to time, but they won’t be as frequent as they had been in the past. I’m still working on that system, and I appreciate the questions, comments, and concerns that folks have shared over the past week or two.My goal is to create a system that ingests content from those social media posts in a way that makes everything easy to view on Liliputing even if you’re using script blockers that might prevent embedded posts from Bluesky or other networks from appearing. But I acknowledge that there’s been a bit of a learning curve to this system, as some readers have pointed out that some content has not been visible on the site.So if you do have any problems accessing content on the site, please let me know! I cannot guarantee that I’ll be able to fix every edge case, but I’ll do what I can.
