On the surface, it's just a port: stick a cable in it, and it'll charge your phone, sooner or later. But in reality, there's a lot more to USB-C than meets the eye. Depending on the hardware behind it, one USB-C port can charge a laptop, drive a monitor, connect an external SSD, or even give you internet access through Ethernet. USB-C itself promises almost nothing It looks the same, but the hardware is a different story entirely Before we dig in, it's important to note that USB-C basically only describes the physical connector. It tells you what kind of cable will fit, but remarkably little about what will happen once you plug the cable in. If USB-A ports are mysterious, USB-C ports are basically impossible to decipher without reading specs or using port testers. USB-C can actually accompany several different USB standards, charging technologies, and video features. The shape doesn't guarantee anything. One USB-C port may be limited to USB 2.0 data speeds, while another supports USB4, DisplayPort video, and enough Power Delivery to charge a laptop. Which is which? Your guess is as good as mine. This explains why a monitor may work through one USB-C port but show nothing through another, for instance, or why an external SSD slows to a crawl depending on your port. Data speed is one of the biggest differences between USB-C implementations. A USB-C port may run at USB 2.0 speeds of 480Mbps, or it could support one of several much faster USB 3.2 and USB4 modes. According to the USB Implementers Forum, those standards identify five transfer rates: 80Gbps, 40Gbps, 20Gbps, 10Gbps, and 5Gbps. Pretty big gap, that. You may not notice the difference when connecting a mouse or keyboard. In fact, I'm pretty sure you won't! But an external SSD will expose it immediately; plug a fast drive into a slow port and you'll notice right away. The connection only operates as fast as the port itself, the cable, and the connected device collectively allow, so you might see varying results even using the same cable. A compatible port can use DisplayPort Alt Mode to send a DisplayPort signal through the USB-C connector, letting you plug your laptop directly into a USB-C monitor. With the right adapter, that same port can also connect to a monitor's regular DisplayPort or HDMI input. You can get video, audio, and USB data through one connection, which is super convenient. Of course, we're back to the same annoying caveat, though. The port needs to support video output in the first place, and you won't know at a glance if it does. A USB-C-to-HDMI adapter can't magically add DisplayPort Alt Mode to a data-only port, and resolution or refresh rate limits can also differ between devices. If I don't plug my phone in once daily, it'll die on me the following day, so I'm very familiar with the port and the cable involved in that. But USB-C can go far beyond topping up a phone. USB Power Delivery lets the charger and device decide how much power should be supplied, with compatible hardware supporting up to 240W. That's enough not just for a phone, but also a laptop, monitor, a dock, and plenty of other devices that used to need their own power adapters. And your phone will be fine even with one of these beefy USB-C chargers, as it'll only request what it can safely use. But that entire setup needs to cooperate, and you won't know if it does until you try it. Even then, subtle differences in power delivery are easy to miss. The bottom line is that a 140W charger paired with a 60W cable will still be limited to 60W regardless. Plug in a capable dock, and it can connect your monitor, Ethernet, external storage, keyboard, mouse, speakers, and laptop charger through one cable. This is USB-C at its very best, although everything attached to the dock still shares the port's available data and video bandwidth, so you may have some hidden bottlenecks in there that'll crop up eventually (often at the worst possible time). How to figure out what your USB-C port can actually do The most reliable way to identify what your port can do is to check the device's official spec sheet or manual. Look for an advertised USB speed alongside explicit mentions of DisplayPort Alt Mode, USB Power Delivery, USB4, or Thunderbolt. If the documentation is vague, a USB-C port tester should do the trick.
