UP sexual exploitation survivor demands marriage with jailed accused, drinks phenyl

A woman in a sexual exploitation case allegedly drank phenyl at a police station after demanding marriage with the jailed accused. The incident drew attention because she had earlier accused him of exploiting her on the pretext of marriage.The woman herself had lodged an FIR against Nishad on July 23, accusing him of sexually exploiting her for three years on the pretext of marriage.A sexual exploitation case registered in UP's Gorakhpur took a perilous turn when the survivor allegedly consumed phenyl inside a police station after demanding that she be married to the arrested accused, whom she called her "lover", police said on Sunday.According to the police, the woman's condition is normal.A resident of Deoria district, the woman reached the police station on Saturday and demanded that she would marry only her "lover", Dhananjay Nishad (aged around 23), currently lodged in jail. Shortly thereafter, she allegedly drank phenyl carried in her bag and collapsed, the police said.Women police personnel rushed her to the Chauri Chaura Community Health Centre. After primary treatment, doctors referred her to the district hospital. Her condition is stated to be stable and out of danger. Family members later reached the hospital. The incident has drawn attention because the woman herself had lodged an FIR against Nishad on July 23, accusing him of sexually exploiting her for three years on the pretext of marriage. She alleged that when she pressed him to marry her, he refused, citing differences in community.Acting on her complaint, police arrested the accused on Saturday and he was sent to jail. Superintendent of Police (North) Gyanendra Nath Prasad said the accused was arrested as per legal procedure and the woman was immediately provided medical assistance after the incident.
