Ukrainian air defenses intercepted just one of 27 Russian ballistic missiles launched during a massive barrage early Saturday morning, Aug. 1, due to a critical shortage of Patriot interceptors, allowing the strikes to kill at least nine people in Kyiv. Zelensky stated that the failure to intercept the remaining 26 ballistic missiles was a direct result of depleted interceptor stockpiles, warning that the deficit actively encourages further strikes. He urged international partners to expedite the delivery of anti-ballistic systems to prevent further loss of life. Heavy casualties in the capital The ballistic missile strikes on Kyiv triggered repeated explosions, killing nine residents and injuring 30 others, including four children, according to the Kyiv City Military Administration. The Darnytskyi district sustained the heaviest casualties. Emergency services reported seven fatalities and 14 injuries in the area, where strikes damaged an administrative building, nearby residential structures, and left a large crater in a public square. In the Solomianskyi district, two people were killed and eight were injured, including two children. A five-story residential building was partially destroyed and caught fire, prompting rescue crews to evacuate 35 people from the upper floors.
