Ubisoft working on new open-world Far Cry game, report says

Published Jul 27, 2026, 2:35 PM EDT A new mainline Far Cry game is in the works, as well as a new spinoff Ubisoft's scraps Far Cry extraction shooter for 'really ambitious' open-world FPS, report says Image: Ubisoft Sign in to your Polygon.com account Vantage Studios, the development team in charge of Ubisoft series such as Assassin's Creed, Rainbow Six, and Far Cry, is reportedly working on a new "open-world FPS" Far Cry game after a very different take on the franchise — an unannounced extraction shooter — was canceled. According to a new report from Insider Gaming, which frequently reports on internal development at Ubisoft, a project codenamed Maverick (the extraction shooter) has been shelved and possibly repurposed for a new open-world shooter codenamed Kodiak. That's in development alongside another Far Cry game codenamed Blackbird, which appears to be the next mainline entry in the 22-year-old franchise. Insider Gaming's report says that Far Cry Kodiak has "passed its conception stage earlier this month" and "has entered development at Vantage Studios." Not much is known about Far Cry Kodiak, except the fact that it will most likely share some of Maverick's unused ideas and that its launch date is still years away. Considering Far Cry is known for its FPS and action-adventure elements, this might be a safer way to satisfy fans of the franchise compared to an extraction shooter. Far Cry 6 was the most recent entry in the series, and it was hit or miss among reviewers when it launched in 2021. Ubisoft hasn't officially announced a new Far Cry game since. Longtime Far Cry producer Dan Hay left the company in 2021, after the release of Far Cry 6. In the meantime, fans of the franchise can also look forward to Hulu's Far Cry TV series from producer Noah Hawley. The show will be presented in anthology form, which means each season will be set in different environments and feature an array of different characters, similarly to the games. Far Cry will star show co-creator Rob Mac, Steve Buscemi, and Lizzy Caplan. It will be available for streaming on Hulu in the U.S. and Disney Plus internationally.
