Transformers feels like the type of franchise that would be endlessly showered in video games of all shapes and sizes. It should be getting everything from easy, cash-grab mobile live-service titles to full-blown AAA experiences on PC and console. However, while the former has been somewhat true for a while now, Transformers has somehow eschewed the AAA market in favor of less-than-stellar AA and even indie-sized projects that consistently fail to deliver the high expectations fans have for the series. While not every recently released Transformers game has been abysmal, few have lived up to the potential of the IP. This has, consequently, led to fans crying out for anything remotely resembling the big-budget title the series deserves and was getting, once upon a time. Fortunately, it appears that our admonishment of Transformers' current trajectory within the world of video games has been heard, as the AAA game we've been dreaming of for years is finally on its way. Transformers Is Getting A Massive New Video Game Back in May 2026, Hasbro confirmed that it had invested $1 billion into creating an in-house video game production pipeline, including the formation of six studios, an internal publishing organization, and the creation of numerous projects, several of which are launching in 2027. The announcement was significant, not just because it led to us getting the incredible Mass Effect-esque RPG, Exodus, or because Hasbro was finally positioning itself as an industry leader as opposed to licensing out its lucrative IP, but because it meant that we would start getting new games from some of the biggest IP in the world. Of course, chief among them is Transformers, an IP that has, as aforementioned, languished somewhat in the video game department. Fortunately, in an interview with The Game Business, Hasbro's CEO, Chris Cocks, confirmed that the company would be producing new games for Transformers, explaining that it will "be building games mostly around D&D, Magic, Transformers, maybe some of our other properties, maybe selectively some new stuff." We're already seeing this come true with the new D&D game Warlock, which was announced during Opening Night Live. With a billion dollars having already been invested into this operation, one can expect the likes of Transformers to get the AAA treatment. However, some may be understandably a tad concerned, as Hasbro's properties typically go down the live service or mobile game route. This is where the exciting part comes in, as Hasbro has apparently come to its senses and devised a rather logical plan that will benefit all Transformers fans. Hasbro's Approach To Video Game Creation Has Me Excited Archetype Entertainment While Hasbro hasn't completely given up its live service ambitions (Monopoly Go is one of the most lucrative mobile games, after all), it has recognized that not every IP needs to strictly go down that route. In fact, Cocks even acknowledged that forcing something to be a live service or mobile experience can often be detrimental, and that "a nice 40 to 50-hours worth of content set at a fair price" can often prove to be a more financially viable product. In the aforementioned interview, Cocks discussed the benefits and negatives of pursuing the long-sought-after live service cash cow, recognizing that the upside is that one can make hundreds of millions from such a project, but "how many people achieve that upside?" It is this line of thinking that has led Cocks and Hasbro to focus their internal game development endeavors (the same ones that are benefiting from that $1 billion investment) on traditional AAA games. Cocks claims that this model is statistically more likely to see them make a return, and therefore continue to be capable of developing more titles. “If you look statistically, and that’s dangerous because it’s a creative enterprise, but if you invest a fair amount of money and give a fair amount of time to a talented team to do a more traditional game, you probably won’t make billions, but your chances of at least making your money back is much higher. And even if you fail, you’re probably making 50, 60, 70 cents on the dollar back. So, when we just looked at the risk-reward equation of that and we looked at the design sensibilities we have — frankly the kind of games we like to play, and I’m more of a traditional gamer — we felt that to be the safer route.” This is incredibly encouraging for Transformers fans, as it means that Hasbro isn't merely going to use the IP to pump out cheap mobile games or licensed titles that fail to inspire. Instead, we could be looking at a future wherein we're playing a AAA Transformers game with 40 to 50 hours of content, one with the production values and budget the series is deserving of. The potential for a game on the scale of Hogwarts Legacy (albeit perhaps not Transformers at school) would be incredible and a huge win for fans. It is refreshing that Hasbro has seen the proverbial light and understands there is a place within the industry for more traditionally developed games that still utilize the benefits of popular IPs like Transformers. While we don't have a release date or even an announcement of a AAA Transformers game, beyond Cock's aforementioned comments, we can likely expect to see something soon. Transformers is undoubtedly a priority for Hasbro, much in the same way D&D games are, and evidently has an enormous fanbase behind it eager to see it finally get the big-budget release it so desperately deserves.
