Although it may seem like a buzzword or phrase, there's more to it than big tech giving away their precious models for free.If training an AI model costs hundreds of millions of dollars — or even billions when you factor in the enormous data centers and specialized chips needed to power them, why would companies spend that kind of money only to give their work away?The answer is that they're not really giving everything away. The phrase "open source AI" gets thrown around a lot, but it doesn't always mean what people think it does. A truly open-source project typically makes its code, training methods and licensing available for anyone to inspect, modify and redistribute.Many of today's AI models are actually open weight rather than fully open source. For everyday users, though, the experience is often the same. A couple of years ago, companies competed primarily on who could build the smartest AI model and who could hit the benchmarks first. Today, that's only part of the equation. Now they're competing to become the platform everyone builds on.Think about Android. Google gives Android away for free because every phone running Android strengthens Google's broader ecosystem. Developers build apps, manufacturers adopt the operating system and users become more likely to use Google's services.AI companies are actually thinking the same way. If thousands of developers build apps around your model, businesses deploy it inside their organizations and researchers improve it, your technology becomes far more valuable than if it stayed locked behind a subscription.Open models spread much fasterWhen a model is widely available, something interesting happens because developers begin fine-tuning it for specific jobs. Maybe universities use it for research or startups build entirely new products on top of it. Hobbyists could even discover creative uses that the original creators never imagined.And, well, that creates a snowball effect. Instead of one company improving the model, thousands of people contribute ideas, tools and innovations around it. Even if the underlying model doesn't change, the ecosystem around it grows rapidly.Open source vs. open-weight AI: What's the difference? These two terms are often used interchangeably, but they're not actually the same thing.Think of it this way:Open source AI is like getting the entire recipe for your favorite meal. You can see every ingredient, understand how it was made, modify it however you like and even share your own version with others.Open-weight AI is more like getting the finished cake. You can eat it, decorate it, serve it to guests and even bake new desserts using it as a base— but you don't know exactly how the original baker made it.Companies still have plenty of ways to make moneyMaking a model available doesn't necessarily mean giving up revenue. Many companies earn money by offering managed cloud services that make those models easier to run, faster or more reliable. Others sell enterprise security features, premium APIs, consulting services or specialized infrastructure.Hardware companies benefit, too. Every new AI model ultimately needs powerful GPUs or AI accelerators to run. In fact, for many years the assumption was that the most capable models would remain closely guarded because they represented a competitive advantage.Now, that thinking has shifted. As more companies released powerful open-weight models, it became harder for closed systems to justify charging a premium based on exclusivity alone. Since the competition isn't about intelligence anymore, factors like speed, developer support, integrations, enterprise features, privacy options and cost all matter, too.That's good news for users because it gives them far more choice than they had even two years ago.What this means for the average ChatGPT userEven if you never download an AI model yourself, you're already benefiting from this shift. Open models are helping create better free AI tools, giving smaller developers access to cutting-edge technology and increasing competition across the industry.They're also making it possible for more AI to run locally on laptops and smartphones, which can improve privacy by keeping sensitive information on your own device instead of sending everything to the cloud.Not necessarily a good thing, but the competition is pushing every AI company to move faster. The result is that consumers have more capable AI assistants, more options to choose from and a steady stream of new features arriving at a pace that would have seemed impossible just a few years ago.So while it might look like AI companies are suddenly giving away their most valuable technology, they're really investing in something even more valuable: building the biggest ecosystem around their models.
