Taylor Sheridan’s SEAL Team Replacement Is Officially Closing In On David Boreanaz’s Series

While Taylor Sheridan has plenty of shows on the air right now, only one of them could be in line to replace the classic David Boreanaz series SEAL Team with its continuing story. There is no shortage of procedural shows on TV, and this format is not limited to focusing on the police by any means. On the contrary, the NCIS franchise focuses on the titular Naval Criminal Investigative Service, while the FBI and CIA franchises focus on their respective three-letter agencies. The 9-1-1 franchise eschews the law enforcement connection almost entirely, focusing instead on first responders like firefighters and paramedics alongside some police officers. While the Law & Order franchise ensures traditional police procedurals are still going strong in 2026, CBS’s seven-season military drama SEAL Team was a rare show that brought this format to a military setting. SEAL Team starred Angel’s David Boreanaz as Master Chief Special Warfare Operator Jason Hayes, the leader of the titular team of Navy SEALs. With an impressive cast and a consistent formula, SEAL Team was a well-liked procedural throughout its 2017-2024 run. However, in the years since its cancellation, a new military procedural has not yet arrived to replace SEAL Team. Fortuntaely, TV super producer/ Yellowstone franchise creator Taylor Sheridan’s odd show out, Lioness now seems primed to take over this role. Given the views it’s getting and rave reviews for season 3, the military drama is set to run for several more seasons, even if it switched to a different showrunner. Taylor Sheridan’s Lioness Is Still Gaining Momentum In Season 3 Image via MovieStillsDB While Sheridan initially rose to fame via his screenplays for Sicario and Wind River, the Yellowstone franchise propelled the writer/director to superstardom. A gritty, R-rated update of Dynasty and Dallas, the multi-generational family saga dropped Justified’s Neo-Western cop show format in favor of a crime drama about a clan of ruthless billionaires who would go to murderous extremes to maintain control of their sprawling titular ranch. Yellowstone’s success led to the traditional Western prequels 1883 and 1923, and its series finale was followed by the sequel shows Dutton Ranch and Marshals. However, this was just the beginning of Sheridan’s reign as a TV and streaming staple. In the years since Yellowstone began, Sheridan has penned Tulsa King and its upcoming spinoff, Frisco King, Landman, The Madison, the prison drama Mayor of Kingstown, and the spy series Lioness. If the latter sounds like something of an anomaly in the writer/ director’s emerging oeuvre, that’s because it is. Lioness marked Sheridan’s first big return to the world of spy thrillers since the Sicario movies. Lioness focuses on the eponymous secret CIA program, overseen by Nicole Kidman’s icy supervisor Caitlyn. Lioness is run by Zoe Saldaña’s tough heroine, Joe McNamara, a case officer who is promoted to running the program after successfully orchestrating the state-sanctioned murder of a CIA target. Lioness is an atypical program in that it enlists female CIA operatives and tasks them with infiltrating terrorist organizations by building close personal relationships with the wives, girlfriends, and other female associates of known CIA targets. Lioness Could Run For Longer Than The David Boreanaz Series Image via Paramount+ Season 1 of the series focused on a new operative’s attempts to befriend the daughter of a terrorist financier, a fraught game of cat and mouse closely monitored by Saldana’s troubled veteran Joe. While Marshals season 2 proves Sheridan’s TV empire is going as strong as ever, the positive reviews of Lioness season 3 are even better news for the prolific writer/director. Introducing a dual timeline storytelling style, Lioness season 3 earned acclaim for becoming more ambitious and unpredictable in its plotting. The ever-busy Sheridan is likely to outsource the running of future seasons to someone else, although he remains the show’s sole show runner in season 3. This means that Lioness now has the potential to not only replace, but potentially even outlast the last great military procedural show, SEAL Team.
