The wider Stapleford Park Estate was owned by the Sherard family for almost 500 years, with Stapleford Park house originally two manors and reunited in the early 16th century. During their tenure, the Sherard family employed Capability Brown to redesign both the parkland and Hall. In 1885, the Estate was sold by the family, and in more recent years was owned by US restauranteur Bob Payton, who purchased the house in 1988 to convert it into a hotel. According to his obituary, he invested a great deal into the house including hiring Wedgwood, Turnbull & Asser, and Crabtree & Evelyn to redecorate its rooms.
