Storytelling fest in Mylapore on August 1, 2

Katharoo Fest, a storytelling festival for children, is back this year with the theme “Our Earth, Our Responsibility – Refuse, Reduce, Reuse, Repair, Recycle.” The festival will be held on August 1 and 2, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., at Sir Sivaswami Kalalaya Senior Secondary School, Mylapore.According to a press release, the two-day festival will bring together children, families and storytellers through storytelling sessions, puppet shows, workshops, book exchanges, children’s book stalls and interactive activities. The event aims to encourage sustainable living by helping participants explore simple, everyday practices that can reduce waste and protect the environment.This year’s festival will feature several hands-on workshops, including a weaving session where participants can create mats using upcycled fabric, craft-based storytelling activities, kolam-making, and an art workshop by award-winning children’s book illustrator Nancy Raj. A special session for parents and teachers will focus on using songs while telling stories, says the release.The festival will also host a Mend Cafe, where participants can learn to repair old clothes by fixing zips, replacing buttons and using applique techniques to give garments a new life. A pop-up thrift stall will showcase reusable accessories, encouraging visitors to move away from a “use and throw” culture.The festival will also provide a platform for children to share stories of their choice, supporting young voices and encouraging creative expression.
