Stephen King’s Unforgettable Thriller Masterpiece Has Officially Vanished From Streaming

Since his first release — Carrie — in 1974, King has become arguably the most famous author of the modern age, both within horror and across the medium alike. His prominence has led to virtually all of his work being adapted for film or television, including releases of the aforementioned supernatural school-age thriller starring Sissy Spacek. Surprisingly enough, however, the critically-acclaimed take of what many consider his best work has been ghosted by all streaming platforms entirely. Despite the existence of countless streaming platforms, Stanley Kubrick's The Shining is not on any streaming service. In fact, the only way to watch it, as of this writing, is to either buy a physical copy (which you should, anyway), or to rent it through a digital marketplace like Prime Video, YouTube, or Apple TV. Released in 1980, The Shining stars Jack Nicholson as Jack Torrance, an aspiring writer who takes a job as the winter caretaker of the isolated Overlook Hotel. Jack moves into the sprawling resort alongside his wife Wendy (Shelley Duvall) and young son Danny (Danny Lloyd), only for the family to quickly discover there's considerably more to the hotel than empty hallways and vacant rooms. What follows includes some of the most iconic horror iconography, recognizable over 40 years later. From the blood pouring through the Overlook's elevators to the twins standing at the end of a hallway and Nicholson smashing his way through a bathroom door with an axe, The Shining has produced imagery that still remains embedded in pop culture today. Even those who've never watched the movie can likely recognize some of its biggest moments. Kubrick's adaptation famously takes plenty of liberties with King's novel, something the author himself hasn't exactly hidden his feelings about since the movie's release. Still, separating the movie from its source material reveals a deeply unsettling psychological thriller that feels unlike virtually anything else in King's massive catalog of horror adaptations. That's what makes its current absence from streaming platforms particularly surprising. The Shining isn't some forgotten adaptation that's fallen through the cracks; it's one of the most defining horror films to ever see release. For now, however, anyone hoping to return to the Overlook — or even book their first stay — will have to pay for the trip separately.
