Last Year's Most Overlooked Supernatural Drama Is Now Streaming On Netflix

Based on a popular comic book series, 2025’s most underrated supernatural horror show is finally available to stream on Netflix in the US. While Shudder’s anthology show Slasher has taken the horror genre to new extremes on the small screen, Netflix has done an admirable job of ensuring that the streaming service is still one of the preeminent providers of horror shows. From Mike Flanagan’s instant classic The Haunting Of franchise to the sorely underrated Marianne, Netflix is home to some truly terrifying, but also endlessly re-watchable horror shows. Of course, not all of these titles are Netflix originals. The streaming service also plays host to plenty of great horror shows from across the world, including a standout 2025 series that just arrived on US Netflix in August 2026. Adapted from Hack/Slash author Tim Seeley and Battlepug creator Mike Norton’s comic book series of the same name, Revival is a blend of supernatural horror, mystery thriller, and character drama that can go toe to toe with HBO’s Stephen King adaptation The Outsider as one of the best genre blends of the last decade. Set in the small town of Wausau, Wisconsin, this little ten-episode series has a big high-concept premise. The town’s recently dead citizens are miraculously, inexplicably resurrected en masse in an event that becomes known as “Revival Day.” Revival Is Based On A Popular Comic Book Series However, a mysterious murder soon dampens the celebrations, especially since both the ordinary living citizens and the newly resurrected “Revivers” are all suspects in the case. While hardly a straightforward Agatha Christie-style mystery, Revival is committed enough to its whodunit plot to ensure that the show never feels like a conventional zombie series, either. Instead, with its weird premise and moody atmosphere, the series is more reminiscent of The Returned or The Leftovers than The Walking Dead or iZombie. In Revival, the not-quite zombie revenants of the show operate very differently from other depictions of the walking undead. For one thing, they still have their memories and the personalities they had in life, as well as maintaining their appearances. For another, they can seemingly heal from injuries faster than the living, which inevitably puts a suspicious spotlight on them when local civilians start to show up dead. Why Revival Deserves A Binge-Watch On Netflix With only ten episodes, Revival is less of a commitment than many horror shows, and it is a series that more than deserves this time from potential viewers. Since the series eschews the light-hearted tone of iZombie, another detective drama set in a world where zombies exist, Revival often feels more like a dark crime thriller with supernatural elements than a standard horror show. Effectively Breaking Bad or Ozark, but with undead characters, the show’s central murder mystery is compelling and unpredictable, while the uncertain characteristics of Revivers keep viewers guessing throughout its brief run. Right up until the show’s shocking finale, the audience is left to question whether the revived really are just like their old selves, flaws and all, or if there is something sinister underlying their return. While a second season would be a welcome surprise, Revival also earns props for offering viewers a genuinely satisfying conclusion to its self-contained story. In an era when the supernatural cop show premise has been done to death by everything from Buffy the Vampire Slayer to Supernatural, Evil, and Lucifer, it would be fair for viewers to wonder whether Revival has anything new to offer. However, its highly serialized story means the show feels closer in tone to True Detective or Sharp Objects, albeit with a supernatural twist, than any of those procedurals. As such, Netflix’s Revival is a must-watch for thriller fans who missed the horror/murder mystery genre blend when it first aired in 2025.
