The platform has undoubtedly changed, especially in navigation and curation. Even just the advent of the Steam Deck has been a major boon for the platform, to the point where studios now need to consider having Steam Deck support, and ensuring that continued development also factors in portable PC devices. Nowyou can try a Steam game that mixes a few sci-fi classics with shades of Baldur's Gate 3. How it pulls that off remains to be seen, but this might be one you'll want to keep an eye on. Sci-Fi RPGs Are Thriving On Steam Although there's no date set yet, developer Lizard Chomp has unveiled Void Nomads, a solo action RPG. Set in a sci-fi universe, you'll need to "survive the void" and scavenge for materials. Here's the rub: "Void Nomads is an RPG set in a sci-fi universe where those who once set out for outer space can never return to inhabited planets. Dispersed among the stars, humanity learnt how to adapt and thrive in the vast cold void. Explore a wide range of locations from small ramshackle outposts to immense corporate stations. Engage with spacers, interstellar vagabonds and daring prospectors. And embark on a journey into the unknown. Human technology depends on components found in ancient alien vessels. Their builders are long gone, but many devices remain active. Scavenging for alien technology can be dangerous, but you must take risks to survive." You're an alien tech scavenger who was just implanted with an "unknown device," so there's tension as you explore the spaceship. The idea is that you may need to use the tech you find to stop whatever the device is doing to you while you scavenge. It's almost a Saw-like premise, but Void Nomads has a dialogue system and options that change based on your relationship with certain characters. Quests also have multiple solutions, not just combat. You can customize your character and change your skills and playstyle (this is where the RPG elements come in), focusing on social skills as well as combat and other technical skills. Void Nomad Has An Interesting Premise Of course, combat is an option, even though the studio says it's not required, and you'll do that in a top-down shooter format with "bullet hell style" confrontations and a dodge ability. This also extends to the game's boss fights, which "each have a set of unique attacks and weaknesses." Cataloging their development journey, the studio explains how players will first interact with the game earlier this year: "The player will search a derelict ship in the tutorial, looking for valuable parts to salvage. I already have some models for the tutorial, but I needed to add a few new ones, including an airlock door, security console, and laser gate. Dialogue will play an essential role in the tutorial, so I also improved the dialogue system. It now supports controller input and shows the entire conversation. I’ve also improved the visuals." If you're on Steam, you may want to wishlist Void Nomad. It's an indie that has lofty goals, and it'll help when the release date is finally announced.
