Picard is one of sci-fi's all-time captains, and Next Generation also has one of the best crews in the series. Pretty much any Star Trek has its merits, but that's the cast I connect with the most. If you're a fan of The Next Generation (or any Trek, really), you're in luck: a new experience is coming that lets you play as multiple crew members, including the captain. Thanks to a new Steam listing, you can check out a game that mixes Star Trek: The Next Generation with some of the more perilous elements of the classic sci-fi series Stargate. Starship Simulator Is Incredibly Ambitious Coming in the future to Steam, Starship Simulator is one of the most ambitious games we've seen in a while. Described as a "deeply immersive" space exploration sandbox, you'll take a starship across the Milky Way, with "real astrophysics" behind the engine. It's not all about relaxing in space, though, as you'll have to take care of your "200+" crewmates and act like an officer as you sail the stars. You can probe samples from alien worlds, learn about extinct civilizations, investigate flora, upgrade your ship, or locate new fuel sources born from alien tech. Here's what you can expect: Explore a scientifically accurate Milky Way galaxy and discover distant uncharted worlds, while having unrestricted access to every deck of your Magellan Class deep space exploration vessel. Interact with numerous fully simulated ship systems, or simply relax in the bar and watch the stars drift by. There are many great space sims out there. Some feature beautiful ship interiors, some have stunningly realistic galaxies, and others have impressive simulated ship systems. There's even software that allows you to soar through the cosmos seamlessly without any loading screens, but what the space sim genre lacks is a title that features all of the above. Procedurally generated races come in different sets, some more aggressive than others, each with its own society. The idea is that you can do a lot of this from space, or head down to the planet to discover things for yourself. You're flying a Magellan-class starship with "miles of cables and conduits" and a "real structural framework." You Can Try Starship Simulator For Free Now Interestingly, if you find a planet that supports life, you can learn how advanced that life is, even down to bacteria. Starship Simulator also uses Unreal Engine 5, which it says will enable massive draw distances and detail across the vast expanse of space. To support this exploration and development, you can control one of eight roles: captain, pilot, science officer, tactical officer, engineer, doctor, morale officer, and passenger. While these roles vary greatly, the captain handles most operations, while passengers don't have to do much beyond living with the crew and doing some lower-stakes tasks. Because it's so ambitious, Fleetyard Studios' Starship Simulator currently doesn't have a release date on Steam. But you can try a demo for free now.
