Speeding driver high on laughing gas jailed for 10 years for killing student | Freelance News Reporter Published October 10, 2026 10:10am Updated October 10, 2026 10:10am Harry Webb, 27, was killed while cycling on a 20mph road in Hackney in September 2023 (Picture: PA) A driver who took laughing gas before speeding at more than double the limit has been jailed for killing a music student. Tiffany Treanor-Johnson, 27, inhaled nitrous oxide before getting behind the wheel of her Audi on the evening of September 10, 2023 , Snaresbrook Crown Court heard. She was clocked doing 53mph in a 20mph zone before hitting cyclist Harry Webb, who died following the crash in Hackney, east London. Mr Webb, an ‘intelligent and wonderfully caring’ drummer and musician, was left with a ‘traumatic’ head injury following the collision on Kenworthy Road, after Treanor-Johnson drove off from the scene. The 27-year-old masters student had only hours earlier moved into his new accommodation for his second year at the London College of Contemporary Music. His mother, Pat, told the court: ‘Watching someone you love die is an image you’ll never forget. We have no future left, each day is painful.’ After colliding with Mr Webb, Treanor-Johnson subsequently mounted the pavement and crashed into a Red Citroen. Brenton Henry, the Citroen driver, said he had made eye contact with Treanor-Johnson as he ‘pulled forward to stop her’ advancing further. He said he then left his car and seized her car keys, while witnessing one of the two girls travelling in the back of the Audi grab a bag before leaving the vehicle. Treanor-Johnson was arrested on the scene by officers, who found fragments of balloons in her car. She had initially denied causing death by dangerous driving before admitting her guilt in April this year. In a statement outside court, Mr Webb’s father called for road crimes to be taken more seriously and enforcement to be stepped up. He said: ‘Nobody should be killed cycling within a 20mph area in London, it is totally unacceptable. A ghost bike and picture of Harry Webb set up at the site where he was killed as a memorial to the music student (Picture: PA) ‘The ripples caused by his death have been immense for so many people unable to come to terms with this senseless road crime.’ A so-called ghost bike, a painted bicycle placed as a memorial near a site where a cyclist has died, was installed at the junction where Mr Webb was killed, together with a picture of him. He was awarded his master’s degree posthumously. Stephanie Panchkowry, defending, said Treanor-Johnson was in a ‘state of shock’ following the incident and had not deliberately evaded responsibility. Treanor Johnson was on Friday given a sentence of 10 years and nine months in prison, on top of a 10-year driving ban. Judge Rosa Dean, sentencing, said: ‘You are solely to blame for the collision. ‘I am sure that you were probably impaired due to taking balloons. ‘We must all hope that you truly are sorry.’ Get in touch with our news team by emailing us at webnews@metro.co.uk.
