Italian prime minister Giorgia Meloni has suspended freedom of movement arrangements with Madrid. Other EU leaders are praying ferries linking Ceuta to the mainland will be halted. If they aren’t, Europe could be about to witness a human wave of illegal migration not matched since more than a million Syrian and other Middle Eastern migrants were waved in. Inevitably, Britain — with its soft touch approach to asylum, free accommodation and benefits — will be a target in what represents a massive threat to security. Spain’s nightmare is a warning to our own PM that he must get a grip of the open borders rabble on Labour’s backbenches who are resisting reform.
