MURDERER Axel Rudakubana will live in a university hall-style room – and be free to spend his days at Broadmoor reading, watching films and TV and writing to friends and relatives. The triple child killer will have access to a state of the art gym, an on-site cafe and shop and even the hospital’s resident hairdresser and dentist. They will implement security measures to keep him safe from dangerous ‘patients’ who include killers Robert Napper, Stockwell Strangler Kenneth Erskine and cannibal Peter Bryan. Rudakubana will not have to work like prison inmates do – but will be expected to undergo intensive therapy and rehab programmes with psychologists and mental health professionals. He is likely to be prescribed anti-psychotic medication with doses varying depending on how he behaves. Inmates at the secure hospital are allowed to watch TVs with Freeview packages plus vetted DvDs. They are encouraged to spend time outdoors, including on escorted walks around the Berskhire facility’s lush central gardens. Staff are barred from calling people prisoners or referring to their ‘cells’ – which look like modern university halls with built in desks and wardrobes. And patients are given more freedom than in jails – and allowed more funds in their accounts to spend on canteen treats like fizzy drinks, chocolate, crisps, magazines and writing materials. Pictures taken after the revamp – carried out by Kier Construction – show spacious wards, modern kitchens and health club-style leisure areas. West London Mental Health Trust crowed that “the new buildings are much more conducive to care, treatment and recovery than the Victorian buildings which they replaced”. Rudakubana had visits from a Muslim Imam at Belmarsh, and will be free to use Broadmoor’s multi-faith “sanctuary”. He will also be encouraged to join woodwork and pottery worskhops and join educational classes if safe to do so. A source, who visited Sutcliffe at Broadmoor and in jail, said: “Broadmoor is like a normal hospital, but nicer – with just a bit of security at the front like when you are going into court. “It is comfortable and relaxed and it’s unbelievable Rudakubana has been moved there. “There are A4-sized signs up saying, ‘Please remember people in here are not prisoners they are patients’. They are scattered about in corridors and in rooms. Bebe King, Elsie Dot Stancombe and Alice da Silva Aguiar were murdered by Rudakubana on 29th July 2024 Credit: Handout A source said Rudakubana’s move to Broadmoor is ‘sickening for the families’ of the victims Credit: PA “He will be treated as a patient, with the only prison-like thing being that his door is locked at night. “Sutcliffe used to spend all his time writing to friends, watching TV and films and reading. “He also had visits from Jehovah’s Witnesses and loved pottery workshops. “It is sickening for the families – but Rudakubana will be treated to all that too. “He won’t even be on much medication unless his condition deteriorates. “There are also regular ward parties and celebrations of things like birthdays and Christmas. “It is disgraceful, but he has really landed on his feet getting sent there. “His day to day life will be much more enjoyable and comfortable and relaxed than it was at Belmarsh.” The lawyer representing the families of Bebe King, six, Elsie Dot Stancombe, seven and Alice da Silva Aguiar, nine, said they were made aware of the development. The victim’s families slammed the killer for trying to “manipulate the system” by moving to a secure hospital. The lawyer said in a statement: “It is safe to say that whilst this news would devastate them at any time, the fact that this has occurred as we approach the second anniversary in our view is another move by AR who would appear to be attempting, once again, to manipulate the system. “We have been given the barest of details and whilst we are supporting the families through this we are urgently seeking a meeting with the appropriate authorities to understand the situation before commenting further.” Wednesday marks the two year anniversary of Rudakubana’s horrific killings and his transfer has received widespread backlash. Writing in The Sun, Nigel Farage said: “Let’s call this what it is. This monster has played the system. And the system has let him.Well, frankly, the system stinks. The Ministry of Justice insists his 52-year sentence is unchanged and that he’ll be sent back to “prison once ‘treatment’ is complete. “That is cold comfort to the families of those victims. “Bebe. Elsie. Alice. Those girls, those daughters, will never come home.” The leader of Reform continued: “That is millions more of taxpayers’ money, over the years ahead, spent on comfort and care for a man who carried out a premeditated attempt at mass murder.” A spokesperson for the Prison Officer’s Association said: “This vile offender has played the system and will now enjoy the freedoms that are afforded mentally unwell patients in secure psychiatric hospitals, including benefits that law abiding tax payers will fund. “My members will be placed at risk without the protections afforded to staff in prisons because he is now classed as a patient. “He should spend his entire sentence in a prison in solitary confinement. “My thoughts are with the families of the victims and all those affected by his heinous crimes.”
