In the video, creator Caleb Friesen explained the meaning behind the term. He said, “Epoch is a word drawn from the world of machine learning. In training, one Epoch is one full pass over the data. So the model sees everything, it updates, and it comes out more capable.”Do note that Epoch is the first major event from Sarvam since its latest fundraising round. The company recently raised $234 million at a $1.5 billion valuation in what it said was the largest Series B round in Indian startup history. The round was led by HCLTech, which committed $150 million as a strategic investor.Sarvam Epoch, new AI model updates and moreEpoch will have two versions – Builder Edition and Entreprise Edition. Sarvam has teased that it will share news about new AI model updates, and launch new products during the Builder Edition. The Indian AI startup will also likely showcase its latest research, share behind-the-scenes technical work.The AI startup currently has multiple models, such as Sarvam-105B and Sarvam-30B. The company’s Sarvam Vision model previously defeated the likes of ChatGPT and Gemini when it came to reading documents in Indian languages. In May, Sarvam reduced prices of its Vision AI model by 67 per cent as developers and partners used the platform to digitise more than 35 million pages. The AI startup also plans to have hands-on workshops, technical deep-dives and live demos. The Enterprise Edition of Epoch will focus on how organisations can adopt AI tools in their daily workflow.Sarvam Epoch will take place in Bengaluru on July 30 and July 31, 2026.Sarvam AI spends millions on computeAhead of the event, Sarvam co-founder and CEO Pratyush Kumar said the Bengaluru startup had spent about $20 million, on compute across three model builds, including its flagship Sarvam-105B.Kumar explained that the total cost may be in millions but it was still less than the likes of China’s DeepSeek. “The compute cost was definitely lesser than what DeepSeek took by a significant margin. In fact, the whole compute was about 20 million, or a little bit less. And we trained three models,” he said in an NPCI podcast.The Sarvam CEO claimed that the figure was not the cost of a single training run, but the cumulative spend across the work involved in releasing a model. He explained, “It’s not about one run that it costs. It’s a lot of exploratory work. It’s a lot of data creation work that gets layered. But the bottom line is, it is not billions of dollars. It’s a single-digit million dollar model.”Much of Sarvam’s training relied on compute that it did not have to pay for outright. The company was the first selected under India’s sovereign AI mission, under which the government agreed to provide access to 4,096 Nvidia H100 GPUs for six months in exchange for an equity stake in the startup.The company has also pointed to growing demand for its products.
