Rubén Blades Receives Icon Award at 2026 Billboard Latin Music Awards: ‘Nobody Becomes an Icon Without Help’

The legendary Panamanian artist was honored the day after his Icon Q&A at Billboard Latin Music Week. Rubén Blades Omar Charcousse Trending on Billboard Rubén Blades was recognized Thursday (Oct. 22) with the Billboard Icon Award at the 2026 Billboard Latin Music Awards. The legendary Panamanian artist received the accolade, which recognizes an artist whose career has not only remained relevant over time but who has also established himself as one of the most distinguished figures in his genre — celebrated globally for achieving both musical and commercial success. “Many thanks to Billboard magazine for this honor bestowed upon a Latin American from Panama — an honor I accept on behalf of all his fellow artists,” Blades said upon receiving the award from his colleague and friend, Puerto Rican artist Gilberto Santa Rosa. “Success never happens on its own; it is the result of many factors. There are many people better than I am who do not receive the recognition they deserve. The opportunities I was given, along with the talent of others, helped me create and develop my career as a musician, singer, and songwriter.” “No one becomes an icon without help,” the legendary singer-songwriter added, before listing and expressing his gratitude to all the musical groups and projects he had been a part of: Papi Arosemena and Conjunto Latino, Tito Cowes and his Combo Impacto, Tuti Delgado and Los Salvajes del Ritmo, Francisco Buckley “Bush” and his Magníficos, Pete Rodríguez y Orquesta, Ray Barretto y Orquesta, Willie Colón y Orquesta, the Fania All-Stars, Seis del Solar, Son del Solar, and Roberto Delgado y Orquesta. “Thanks to my family, my wife Luba, my colleagues, my friends, my teachers and mentors, Latin America, Panama, the world and everyone who supports us — and who has supported us all this time.” Blades concluded his remarks by paraphrasing the late, legendary Mexican singer and actor Pedro Vargas: “As the ‘Immortal Tenor of the Americas’ used to say: ‘Very grateful, very grateful, very grateful.’” He also channeled the Panamanian percussionist Raúl “Toto” Rivera, mimicking his distinctive way of saying the word “gracias.” Over more than five decades, Blades has been one of the most influential voices in Latin music, contributing to the redefinition of salsa through a unique combination of musical innovation and powerful storytelling. As a central figure in New York’s salsa revolution of the 1970s, the Panamanian singer, songwriter and musician expanded the horizons of classic Afro-Cuban salsa by incorporating influences from rock, jazz, pan-Latin music and sounds from various parts of the world. His songs have stood out not only for their unforgettable melodies but also for their socially conscious lyrics and memorable characters that turned everyday life stories into timeless music. Who could forget classics from his repertoire like “Pedro Navaja,” “Decisiones” or “El Padre Antonio y Su Monaguillo Andrés”? On Wednesday (Oct. 21), Blades took part in an exclusive Icon Q&A during Billboard Latin Music Week, where he spoke with Leila Cobo, Billboard’s co-chief content officer, in one of the most memorable moments of the week. Also an actor and former politician, Blades continues to record and tour internationally; he recently released País Portátil in collaboration with Roberto Delgado & Orquesta, an album of eight interconnected songs that explores themes such as migration, corruption, imprisonment, social responsibility and hope. Broadcast live from the James L. Knight Center in Miami, the 2026 Billboard Latin Music Awards ceremony aired live on Telemundo and Peacock. The gala brings together the most prominent figures in Latin music for an evening of unforgettable performances, collaborations and special honors. In addition to Blades, this year’s special honorees include Cristian Castro, with the Billboard Lifetime Achievement Award; Fuerza Regida, with the Billboard Vanguard Award; and Rosalía, with the Billboard Hall of Fame Award.
