‘Reckless’ Russia Condemned as Missile with ‘Significant’ Payload Crashes in Poland

The overnight violation of the airspace of Poland, a key NATO eastern-flank state and an EU member, prompted criticism across Europe and raised fresh fears that Russia’s war against Ukraine is spilling over into neighboring countries. The missile struck a field near Tarnawa-Kolonia, around 80 kilometers from the Ukrainian border, during a large-scale Russian attack on Ukraine, leaving a crater approximately 10 meters wide and five meters deep. Deputy Defense Minister Cezary Tomczyk said the weapon was Russian. ‘We can confirm with full responsibility that it was a Russian Kh-101 missile—a cruise missile capable of carrying even nuclear warheads—which exploded on impact with the ground,” Tomczyk told private broadcaster TVN24. “It was a potentially very dangerous missile,” he added. Foreign Minister Radosław Sikorski told the BBC that it was too early to determine whether the missile had entered Polish airspace deliberately. “We do not know whether it was a malfunction or a deliberate act, but at this stage we are considering various possibilities,” he said. F-16 scrambled Poland’s Operational Command said the missile was detected in Polish airspace at around 3:40 a.m. local time on Thursday while Russia was carrying out a major missile and drone attack against western Ukraine. A Polish F-16 fighter jet was scrambled to identify and intercept the object as it flew westwards. The missile disappeared from radar six minutes later, prompting the military to send a helicopter to its last known location. The helicopter crew later identified what appeared to be the impact site in an uninhabited field. A country on alert Poland, which is one of Ukraine’s closest allies, has remained on heightened alert throughout Russia’s full-scale invasion as a series of missile and drone incursions have tested the alliance’s air defenses. Last September, around 20 Russian drones entered Polish airspace during a large-scale attack on Ukraine, prompting Polish and allied forces to shoot down several of them in what marked the first direct engagement with Russian targets over NATO territory since the war began. Prosecutors’ spokesman Kozak said on Thursday that investigators were securing missile fragments and other debris from the missile impact site and collecting soil samples for specialist analysis. Around 50 soldiers from Poland’s Territorial Defense Forces were deployed to help search the surrounding area after it had been mapped using drones. An expert from Ukraine was traveling to Tarnawa-Kolonia after Kyiv offered to assist Polish authorities in identifying the missile.
