PNP sees no security threat to Marcos’ 5th Sona

INQUIRER PHOTO / NIÑO JESUS ORBETA MANILA, Philippines — The Philippine National Police (PNP) said there was no security threat being monitored for President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.’s fifth State of the Nation Address (Sona) this coming Monday, July 27. “All systems go. Of course, we will be doing some adjustments if there’s a new situation. We’re in the final phases. We’ve laid out our whole security plan,” PNP public information chief Col. Allen Rae Co, speaking in a mix of Filipino and English, told reporters in an interview in Camp Crame on Friday. “It’s good that we don’t see a threat. But, of course, all information, whenever we receive them, we’re looking at them and, if need be, we will take the necessary action,” he maintained. Co also noted that the National Capital Region Police Office (NCRPO) will be on full alert starting 5 p.m. on July 24. “Our full alert status doesn’t mean there’s chaos or there’s a threat. Not necessarily. We do this so that we will be able to better handle any situation that may arise,” he explained. At least three groups were granted permits by the local government to stage rallies along Commonwealth Avenue on the day of the Sona, according to the PNP. Article continues after this advertisement Meanwhile, Co noted that the PNP has no details yet from the Iglesia ni Cristo (INC) regarding its possible activity also on Monday for the latter’s 112th founding anniversary. “We will likely increase our deployment of police officers if it pushes through. This would be to ensure the safety of all participants, especially if we expect thousands to celebrate with the Iglesia ni Cristo,” he said.
