PM Modi may attend EU summit in December

New Delhi: Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi is expected to attend the European Union summit in Brussels on December 17–18, where India and the EU could sign their long-awaited free trade agreement, according to a report citing officials familiar with the negotiations. The visit has not yet been officially confirmed, and the plans could still change. Modi’s participation would give both sides an opportunity to formally sign the trade agreement, negotiations for which were concluded earlier this year. The proposed agreement is significant for both economies, with the combined markets representing about 2 billion people and more than one-fifth of global GDP. India and the EU have also strengthened their broader strategic relationship, including through a security and defence partnership concluded at their January 2026 summit. At a June meeting on the sidelines of the G7 Summit, Modi, European Council President António Costa and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen stressed the importance of early signing and implementation of the India-EU FTA.
