Man dies after a crash between a train and a van at a level crossing while two rail passengers are injured, police say

See more Daily Mail on Google - save us as a Preferred Source Published: 14:42 EDT, 29 August 2026 | Updated: 15:09 EDT, 29 August 2026 A man has died after a train collided with a van in West Lancashire, police have said.British Transport Police (BTP) said they were called at 3.18pm on Saturday to reports a train had struck a van at a level crossing in Burscough.One person was in the van and a man was pronounced dead at the scene, BTP said.Two train passengers were treated for minor injuries, while another travelling with her children described being 'shook' by the crash.A major emergency response was launched, with police, fire and ambulance crews attending the scene and nearby farmland.Passengers could be seen being helped from the train by emergency services teams.One passenger posted a picture of the damaged interior on X shortly after the crash, writing: 'I'm still on the train with my kids. We are all shook.' BTP said: 'Inquiries are ongoing to establish the full circumstances of what happened, any witnesses who haven't already spoken to police are asked to text BTP on 61016 quoting the reference 373 of 29 August.'Paramedics and the fire service also attended the incident.The incident is not being treated as suspicious, BTP added.In a post on X, Network Rail said trains were suspended between Southport and Manchester as emergency services responded to an incident at Martins Lane level crossing in Burscough.National Rail said on its website that all lines were closed between Wigan Wallgate and Southport, with disruption expected to continue throughout the rest of Saturday and buses replacing train services.This is a breaking news story, more to follow.
