Peak heatwave hits Egypt: EMA warns of worst 24 hours with soaring heat and humidity

Hot weather-drinking water Egypt’s Egyptian Meteorological Authority (EMA) has issued a weather update for Cairo and the governorates, warning that a severe heatwave across most parts of the country is reaching its peak. Extremely hot and humid conditions are expected during the day in most regions, with hot and humid weather along the northern coast. Moderately warm and humid conditions will prevail overnight and into the early morning. In its statement, the authority detailed that expected high temperatures will hit 40°C in Greater Cairo, reaching 43°C in Upper Egypt, 41°C in Northern Upper Egypt, 39°C in the Nile Delta, 35°C along the northwestern coast, and 33°C along the northeastern coast. The EMA added that elevated humidity levels will intensify the feel-like temperature, driving the heat index up to 42°C in Greater Cairo, 44°C in Southern Upper Egypt, and 43°C in Northern Upper Egypt, marking what is expected to be the most intense 24-hour stretch of this heatwave. Weather maps indicate the formation of morning fog between 4:00 AM and 8:00 AM across parts of northern Egypt extending to Greater Cairo, the Canal Cities, Central Sinai, and Northern Upper Egypt, which may be dense at times on select roadways. The report also noted intermittent wind activity across most areas, offering slight evening relief in open spaces. However, active winds along parts of the Mediterranean coastline—including El Saloum, Matrouh, El Alamein, Alexandria, and Baltim—are expected to produce wave heights ranging between 1.5 and 2.25 meters. Furthermore, the authority pointed to a minor chance of low-lying cloud formation over scattered areas of the northern coast, the Nile Delta, Greater Cairo, and the Canal Cities, which could lead to light, non-disruptive drizzle in isolated spots. The EMA urged the public to avoid direct sunlight during peak hours and stay well-hydrated by drinking plenty of water and fluids, with a special emphasis on the elderly, children, individuals with chronic illness, and outdoor workers.
