Patches Posted For Enabling NVMe On All Apple M3 Based SoCs With Linux

While Linux 7.2 brought initial Apple M3 support and Linux 7.3 brought M3 Pro / Max / Ultra support, the mainline Linux kernel support for the M3 series hardware remains very basic and not yet ready for daily driving. But more work continues to be upstreamed and today the patches were posted for getting NVMe storage up and running across all Apple M3 hardware. Janne Grunau posted the seven patch series for enabling NVMe on all M3 and M3 Pro / Max / Ultra devices. The M3 series NVMe works the same way as with prior Apple M2 Pro / Max / Ultra devices. But because of Device Trees, another ~140 lines of YAML and DT additions are needed to get this NVMe support in place for the compatible Apple M3 series. Given the timing and this just being Device Tree additions for bringing up NVMe on the Apple M3 hardware, hopefully it will still make it in time for the Linux 7.4 merge window in October. The patches are out for review on the Linux kernel mailing list. While the Apple M3 support is still being laid out in the mainline kernel, those with Apple M3 hardware today wanting to run Linux are best off for now using the latest downstream Asahi Linux with its Apple M3 support for carrying the latest work well before it reaches the official kernel tree.
