Passenger dies after jumping in front of Bengaluru metro train at Huskur Road Station; Yellow Line services hit for two hours

The incident resulted in disruption of Yellow Line services between 5.55 p.m. and 8 p.m, which is the peak hour. | Image for representation purpose | Photo Credit: File photo A passenger died after allegedly jumping onto the tracks in front of an approaching train at Huskur Road Metro Station on Bengaluru Metro’s Yellow Line on Monday (July 27) evening.The train operator noticed the passenger on the tracks and immediately applied the emergency brakes. However, the passenger came under the train and succumbed, a BMRCL official said.The incident led to disruption of services for nearly two hours from around 6 p.m.The deceased has been identified as Rajesh Hiremath, aged between 30 and 35, a native of Raichur district in Karnataka. According to preliminary information, he had previously worked with a private news channel's English YouTube platform and had left the organisation several months ago.According to the Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL), the incident occurred at around 5.50 p.m. “Following the incident, the train operator alerted the Operations Control Centre (OCC), which activated the prescribed emergency response protocols. Traction power in the affected section was immediately switched off, while station staff and Metro security personnel rushed to the site. The police were informed, and rescue and recovery operations were carried out in coordination with the police and other authorities,” the official said.The incident resulted in disruption of Yellow Line services between 5.55 p.m. and 8 p.m, which is the peak hour. During this period, Metro services remained operational only on the stretch between Electronic City Metro Station and Rashtriya Vidyalaya Road Metro Station.A BMRCL official said that the traction power was restored at 7.42 p.m. after the completion of rescue operations, track clearance and mandatory safety inspections. Normal passenger movement and full train operations on the Yellow Line resumed by 7.57 p.m., with services returning to normal shortly thereafter.“To minimise inconvenience, we made continuous public announcements at stations and inside trains. Passenger Information Display Systems (PIDS) were updated regularly, while station staff guided commuters on regulated services and alternative travel arrangements,” the official added.BMRCL also announced that passengers affected by the disruption were refunded their ticket fares. Refunds for online tickets involving curtailed journeys will be processed on Tuesday (July 28).The BMRCL in a release reiterated its appeal to passengers not to enter the track area under any circumstances, stating that such actions not only endanger lives but also disrupt Metro operations and pose significant risks to public safety. It urged commuters requiring assistance to immediately approach station staff instead of attempting to access restricted areas.Meanwhile, the Hebbagodi Police and Metro staff recovered the body from the tracks.
