Sign in to your How-To Geek account AI coding tools are getting increasingly good at writing software and generating a substantial amount of code. However, that’s just one part of building an application, and it creates a key problem: developers need a reliable way to store, organize, track changes, and manage that code. GitHub has traditionally been a place for this. Now, OpenAI is taking on more of that responsibility by buying Pierre Computer, a developer tools startup whose tech already runs inside Codex. OpenAI wants Codex to be where your code lives A full coding workspace OpenAI says it plans to bring Pierre’s Code Storage feature fully into Codex after the acquisition closes. This means that developers will be able to use the platform for more than generating code and fixing bugs. They can have a central place to store their projects and manage the code as it evolves, because making sure everything works well together can be complicated. This also keeps the workflow in one place instead of moving between Codex and separate developer tools. GitHub was largely designed around developers working on the code themselves, and it served as the primary platform for storing and managing code for most of the software world for years. AI agents can modify thousands of lines of code without human handling manually at every step. This creates a growing demand for tools that can manage AI-generated code at scale. That’s where Pierre’s technology inside Codex could prove useful. It will also help OpenAI expand Codex beyond just code generation and into the infrastructure developers use to manage their projects. The development comes on the back of OpenAI’s revelation of Pando—a system built to handle the huge amount of code produced by AI agents. It’s meant to keep up when AI writes code faster than people can. OpenAI isn’t the only one to bring storage capabilities inside Codex. Cursor introduced its own GitHub rival called Origin in August this year. So these moves are seen as a challenge to GitHub. Meanwhile, Anthropic’s Claude takes a different approach with Claude Code connecting directly to GitHub instead of a native code-hosting service of its own. GitHub is still hugely important and isn’t going anywhere. OpenAI’s announcement isn’t about GitHub’s replacement, so nothing changes for software developers for now. But if you rely on Codex, you can expect your workflow to happen in one place. Source: OpenAI
