No relief for Gujarat: Monsoon system over Rajasthan to drop heavy rain

There is unlikely to be any immediate relief from the relentless monsoon in Gujarat, with the India Meteorological Department (IMD) forecasting widespread heavy to very heavy rainfall across the state on July 24 and July 25.Even as floodwaters continue to affect several districts after days of torrential rain, weather conditions remain favourable for another spell of intense showers. (Photo: PTI) According to the IMD's latest forecast, isolated places in South Gujarat are likely to receive extremely heavy rainfall on Friday, July 24, while heavy to very heavy rain is expected over parts of South Gujarat, Saurashtra and Kutch on both Friday and Saturday, July 25.The weather agency has warned that active monsoon conditions will persist through the two-day period. MONSOON DRENCHES GUJARATThe continuing rain is being driven by an active monsoon system, supported by a low-pressure area over southwest Rajasthan and adjoining Pakistan and an associated cyclonic circulation extending through the lower and middle levels of the atmosphere.At the same time, an active monsoon trough and strong moisture-laden winds from the Arabian Sea are supplying abundant moisture into Gujarat, creating favourable conditions for prolonged heavy rainfall. (Photo: IMD) The forecast comes after one of Gujarat's most intense rain spells this monsoon.In the 24 hours ending at 6 am on July 23, Umbergaon in Valsad district received 906 mm of rainfall, while Kaprada recorded 731 mm and Nanapondha 643 mm, according to the State Emergency Operation Centre.Several other locations in Valsad, Navsari, Tapi and The Dangs also recorded exceptionally heavy rainfall, triggering flash floods, inundating roads and disrupting transport and power supply.
