No proposal received yet from Karnataka government for second airport site: MoCA

The Airport Authority of India has conducted pre-feasibility studies of three sites for the development of a second airport in Bengaluru, on the request of the State government. | Photo Credit: File Photo With Karnataka government reportedly examining Harohalli as a potential fourth site for Bengaluru’s second international airport, the Ministry of Civil Aviation (MoCA) has said that it is yet to receive any proposal under the Greenfield Airports Policy either from the government or any airport developer.Minister’s replyAs per information provided by Minister of State for Civil Aviation Murlidhar Mohol to questions in the Lok Sabha during the ongoing session of Parliament, the Airports Authority of India (AAI) has conducted pre-feasibility studies of three sites for the development of a second airport in Bengaluru, on the request of the State government.“The pre-feasibility study report has been sent to the Government of Karnataka (GoK). Government of India has not received any proposal thereafter under Greenfield Airports Policy either from GoK or any airport developer for development of a second Greenfield airport near Bengaluru,” the Minister said.Mr. Mohol was replying to questions by Bangalore Central MP P.C. Mohan on details regarding the current status of the second airport, the expected completion date of the feasibility study, the expected timeline for final approval and the commencement of construction.“A high-level team from AAI had inspected three sites at Choodahalli and Somanahalli on Kanakapura Road, as well as another location on the Nelamangala-Kunigal Road in April 2025 and submitted the report to the government,” Mr. Mohol said.The State government has appointed a Singapore consultancy to study the feasibility of the three locations.Examining fourth siteHowever, during a recent meeting chaired by Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar regarding the construction of the second international airport, he had directed concerned departments to examine Harohalli as a potential fourth site.Mr. Shivakumar had said that the proposed project should not result in large-scale displacement of people and instead pick a location which has lesser number of human habitations, fewer hills besides being technically feasible.He also stated that another criteria was to choose a site where the land prices are not too high and the government would not face a huge burden on account of compensation.
