A new image of Godzilla reveals an incredible upgrade for the iconic kaiju, granting the King of Monsters gleaming armor in an apocalyptic battle. Here's what you need to know about the upgrade, and what comes next... Godzilla is constantly changing, with every threat pushing it to achieve a new level of power. From Godzilla Ultima to SpaceGodzilla, Godzilla has unlocked some jaw-dropping upgrades across the history of the franchise, however these power-ups are rarely technological in nature. That's about to change, as Godzilla undergoes an armored transformation. But on a battlefield spanning the entire multiverse, will even Godzilla's new armor be enough to win the day? Godzilla Gets Iron Man Armor in Multiversal Battle In a newly revealed variant cover for Godzilla Conquers the Multiverse #2, artist Carlos Fabian Villa depicts the traditional Godzilla battling a version wearing a kaiju-sized version of Marvel's Iron Man armor. The Iron Godzilla is letting loose with repulsor blasts from its hands, as lightning flashes across the sky above. This kaiju may be an armored Godzilla or a new version of Mechagodzilla, and seemingly references Dave Wachter's variant cover for the prior Godzilla Destroys the Marvel Universe #3, below. While it's possible the variant cover is just an epic visual, the premise of the series makes it likely fans will finally see this Iron Godzilla in action. Get Ready for a Whole Multiverse of Godzilla Variants Godzilla Conquers the Multiverse is the latest entry in Marvel's Godzilla trilogy, which has seen Knull (aka the King in Black) take control of the King of Monsters, using Godzilla to take out the Asgardian gods and conquer Earth-616. In response, Doctor Doom is leading a team of heroes and villains across the multiverse, gathering a kaiju army to reclaim the planet The most prominent recruit teased so far is a Godzilla with gigantic Wolverine claws, seemingly codenamed 'Weapon Giga,' however more have been promised. It's likely that if Marvel is showcasing the Iron Man Godzilla on cover art, it will have a role in the story, and writer Gerry Duggan has confirmed fans will see Mothra and an armored version of Marvel's Fin Fang Foom with adamantium skin. The Wolverine Godzilla likewise comes from a prior Godzilla Destroys the Marvel Universe variant cover from Dave Wachter. And if two of those covers are becoming canon, it's possible fans will see even more... Marvel Already Set Up More Godzilla/Superhero Combos The use of the Iron Man Godzilla makes it more likely that Wachter's other variants will appear, including a flaming-headed Ghost Rider Godzilla, a vicious Carnage Godzilla and a rocky Thing Godzilla. The Venom Godzilla is less likely, given that the mainline Godzilla is already empowered by symbiote matter, placing it under Knull's control. It's also possible that Marvel will connect its Godzilla trilogy to the prior Godzilla vs. one-shots, where the King of Monsters took on icons including the X-Men, Thor, the Hulk and more. Each of these issues combined Godzilla with a source of immense power from Marvel lore, upgrading the kaiju with Hulk's gamma power, Silver Surfer's Power Cosmic, Thor's All-Black the Necrosword and more. So far, the larger Godzilla trilogy hasn't connected to these stories, which took place in their own continuities, with major events including the death of Thor. However, voyaging out into the multiverse could allow the two to converge, turning Godzilla Conquers the Multiverse into the ultimate celebration of how Marvel has handled this exciting era for the King of Monsters. Godzilla Conquers the Multiverse #1 is coming July 22 from Marvel Comics, followed by issue #2 on August 26.
