They've crafted a niche industry for themselves as one of the arbiters of PC gaming, and that has consistently led a lot of fans to stay loyal to the platform for over two decades. Yep, that's how long Steam has been in operation, so it makes sense that they'd have this sort of reputation in a marketplace full of dead platforms. With more hardware on the way beyond the Steam Machine and new Steam Controller, they could continue their efforts toward market dominance in multiple sectors. Pricing is a bit wild right now, but if they can stabilize and gain traction, that could change. If you're not looking to invest in hardware right now, there are plenty of games to play. Over on Steam, there's a free game that's available that combines the hit horror movie Backrooms with evil Teletubbies. Live on Steam now, you can pick up Awakeness: YALDA Night entirely for free, and it could end up being your next horror game session. The actual free price helps, but there are some unique concepts afoot here that the Steam community is taking to. Here's a swift overview of what you're getting yourself into: "Awakeness is a first-person psychological horror set in Barzakh, a higher layer of reality where space and emotion distort. Explore looping corridors, solve subtle environmental puzzles, and evade an unseen presence using stealth and light." Your job is to navigate Barzakh, which is a "vast decaying house-like structure" with endless corridors. There is no traditional level system, as the game is "semi-linear," with interconnected spaces. You'll progress through completing puzzles, while dealing with rooms that are "reset or subtly altered" over time. There is no combat system or dialogue. You only need to complete puzzles and deal with "hostile presences." So far, reviews have been positive, with one in particular raving about it: "It's rare that I find a game too difficult for me to beat as enjoyable and revolutionary as this one! I can't praise this game enough! Not only is it 100% complete and FREE, but it's also incredibly well thought out and insanely addicting....and I'm NOT a puzzle person." If you're curious, this is a single-player game meant to be finished in an afternoon. You can't really beat that for a free Steam game, even if there are tons of horror projects already live on the platform.\ Brand Valve Original Release Date September 12, 2003
