Marvel's new Avengers: Doomsday teaser might be brief, but it hits the Marvel Cinematic Universe movie's major Captain America debate head on, and the comics show what would be the perfect follow-up to a new scene. Chris Evans' Captain America is one of the faces of the MCU alongside Robert Downey Jr.'s Iron Man. There is no denying that Marvel suffered in their absence. After all, Evans' Steve Rogers and Downey's Tony Stark were not only fan-favorites, but they had a constant presence in the MCU throughout the Infinity Saga. As Marvel's Multiverse Saga spread out hero appearances more and went several years without a single Avengers movie, characters like Steve and Tony were sorely missed. That said, the MCU's slate of projects has kept evolving. After an older Steve gave Anthony Mackie's Sam Wilson the Captain America shield, Sam went on a journey to become the MCU's new Captain America in a Disney+ MCU TV show, The Falcon and the Winter Soldier. In 2025, Sam led his first movie as the hero, Captain America: Brave New World. However, both in-universe and among fans, a debate about who is Captain America has raged on. Choose the movie with the higher Rotten Tomatoes score. With the announcement that Evans will return in Avengers: Doomsday as Steve Rogers, that debate has only become more intense, even if Marvel has time and again reaffirmed that Sam is Captain America. Having the MCU's original Captain America return was always going to lead to that. Now, a new scene from Avengers: Doomsday that directly tackles this debate has been revealed, and it could offer the perfect solution. Marvel's New Avengers: Doomsday Teaser Touches On A Divisive Topic While MCU fans wait for another full-on Avengers: Doomsday trailer, which is likely to come in November, given how the Marvel movie will be released in theaters on December 18, a Doomsday teaser as part of a Major League Baseball crossover was just released. There is not a lot of new footage in the teaser, with most of it being focused on Pedro Pascal's Reed Richards and the Fantastic Four at a baseball game. That said, Evans' Steve Rogers does get the spotlight on him. There is a quick scene where he teases Chris Hemsworth's Thor about taking Mjölnir in the movie. That said, the biggest moment featuring Steve in the Avengers: Doomsday teaser comes when Paul Rudd's Ant-Man talks to him, saying, "Right, Cap?" Steve looks serious at him, while Sam Wilson, in full Captain America suit, stares at Scott, who realizes what he just did and changes it to "Steve" and then "Cap" again, confused about how to address Evans' MCU character now that he is back while Mackie's Sam is the active Captain America of the franchise. This is Marvel Studios directly addressing the Captain America debate fans have been going on about since Evans was announced to return. Avengers: Doomsday Needs To Use Marvel Comics' Perfect Follow-Up To Ant-Man's Line While Scott's Captain America confusion comes off as just a funny moment in the new Avengers: Doomsday trailer, the scene could turn to the comics to make the moment count and resolve the Captain America debate once and for all. In Marvel Comics, there is a defining moment where Steve, who has now returned to action, refers to Sam, dressed in his iconic white Captain America costume, and says, "He's Captain America. I'm just Steve these days." Given how the scene in question seems to come early in the MCU movie, with the heroes uniting for the first time, this is the perfect moment to address the Captain America debate and have Steve of all characters put it to rest, making sure all the surrounding heroes understand where Sam stands. Given their close bond in the MCU, that is the most likely outcome after Scott's funny moment. As such, even if Steve puts on a Captain America suit later on in Avengers: Doomsday or 2027's Avengers: Secret Wars, he and Sam can co-exist then with the mantle.
