It follows Resident Evil Requiem, Onimusha: Way of the Sword, and Pragmata as Capcom perfects its ability to port its graphically intense triple-A titles to Nintendo's latest console. Overall, the Switch 2 port of Monster Hunter Wilds has been well received, and players are having a good time, but one complaint keeps resurfacing: Wilds' art style isn't very good, and the handheld console's fidelity only makes it worse. Monster Hunter Wilds' Switch 2 Port Is A Miracle, But It Doesn't Look Great Since its demo launched yesterday, various threads have appeared on Reddit discussing the art style of Monster Hunter Wilds. These threads typically start by saying how impressed they are that the game runs on a portable console, then dive deep into the art style Capcom created. "It definitely shows some of the visual shortcomings and compromises of Switch 2," one comment said, replying to image comparisons of the Switch 2 demo and the PS5 Pro version of the game. "The lower draw distance on Switch 2 here is notable. And the Switch 2 really lessens foliage density. But it's still massively impressive that there's even games to compare here." Many shared this view, but it opened a wider discussion about the direction Capcom took with Wilds' art. "Art style and theme just isn't that good, honestly. They leaned toward realism too much," said PaoLakers. "World and Rise look so much more colorful and alive than Wilds. Honestly, it's kinda depressing to run around in Wilds. Lots of bland environments." Zutt3n added, "It’s not really the 'filters' or colors, it’s the artstyle itself. Saturation and stuff is not gonna change that. The old games with their painted backgrounds are still peak for me when it comes to MH aesthetic." It's hard to argue with this assessment. As a big Monster Hunter fan myself, I find Wilds' art a little uninspiring compared to the games that came before it. At this year's Tokyo Game Show, we spoke with the Monster Hunter Wilds team, including Genki Sunano, producer for Monster Hunter Wilds on the Nintendo Switch 2. He outlined the challenges the team faced, especially in the wake of the game's poor PC launch. "It's definitely been a new level of challenge considering we just about got the PC to where it needed to be. We've been working on the performance of the game continually," he said. "When it came to adding Nintendo Switch 2, we reviewed everything we could about how the game processes internally and all aspects of performance, and made as many tweaks and improvements as we could."
