The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) has selected five states as potential hosts for Nuclear Lifecycle Innovation Campuses. The Nuclear Lifecycle Innovation Campuses are a new effort to strengthen and modernize the country’s full nuclear fuel cycle. The DOE announced the selection of five states – namely Utah, Tennessee, Oklahoma, Louisiana, and Idaho – as potential hosts through a press release earlier this week. The campuses will aim to modernize the country’s nuclear fuel cycle. They will attract significant investment, aim to expand domestic manufacturing, and also create new jobs in the respective regions. The U.S. Secretary of Energy Chris Wright has signed Memorandums of Understanding with the five states to continue exploring opportunities to host Innovation Campuses and support the Trump administration’s vision for American energy dominance and national energy security. What are the Nuclear Lifecycle Innovation Campuses? The Nuclear Lifecycle Innovation Campuses will be designed to support activities across the full nuclear fuel lifecycle. This includes nuclear fuel fabrication, enrichment, reprocessing used nuclear fuel, and final disposition of used nuclear fuel. Moreover, depending on the capabilities in each state, the campuses could also host advanced reactors for power generation, alongside advanced manufacturing and co-located data centers. According to a press release by the DOE, the campuses have the “potential to attract up to $50 billion in capital investment, generate as much as $10 billion in state and local tax revenue, and create nearly 25,000 jobs with the establishment of a campus.” They will be established through voluntary federal-state partnerships. Earlier in January, the DOE had issued a request for information inviting states to express interest in hosting Nuclear Lifecycle Innovation Campuses. This marked the first step towards potentially establishing voluntary Federal-State partnerships in the sector. The states had been asked to submit their responses by April 1, 2026. According to the press release by DOE, 26 states had expressed their interest for the initiative. “I’m pleased to announce that after reviewing 28 applications from 26 states, the Energy Department has selected five initial contenders to further explore building Nuclear Lifecycle Innovation Campuses,” Secretary Wright said. He went on to add that the concept is a result of “President Trump’s leadership and ambitious directives to restore the domestic nuclear fuel cycle and get America’s nuclear industry growing again.” How will it affect American nuclear fuel supply? According to a report published by World Nuclear Association, the United States is the world’s largest producer of nuclear power. The country alone accounts for 30 percent of worldwide nuclear electricity generation. In the country, nuclear power accounted for 18 percent (816 TWh) of total energy produced in 2024. The US intends to quadruple nuclear energy capacity to 400 GWe by 2050, and it also intends to deploy advanced reactors at a rapid pace in the near term. To reach the desired energy production levels, the country will need a vast amount of nuclear fuel to power its fleet of existing and upcoming nuclear reactors. This includes low-enriched uranium (LEU) for the existing reactor fleet and high-assay low-enriched uranium (HALEU) for the more advanced units.The US has for long been reliant on Russia for meeting its nuclear fuel needs, something the Trump administration wants to change.
